    SAMELLA LEWIS (1923 - 2022) Creole Woman. Gouache on wove paper, 1949. 285x234 mm; 11¼x9¼ inches. Signed, titled and dated in pencil, lower edge. Provenance: acquired from Paramour Fine Arts, Michigan; private collection, Illinois (1998). This early, modernist work on paper by artist, art historian and educator, Samella Lewis, portrays a young woman in three-quarter profile. In 1947, Lewis was doing her graduate work at the Ohio State University. In 1949, she lived with relatives in the Bayou Teche region of Louisiana painting more portraits of Creole workers from the sugarcane fields. In 1951, Lewis became the first African American woman to receive doctoral degrees in both fine art and art history.

Featuring the poetry of Maya Angelou, Lewis conveys to her audience her feelings about growing up in the Jim Crow South. Inscribed in the plate is a quote from Angelou's poem, written for her friend, Samella Lewis, Our Grandmother:: "However I am perceived and deceived, however my ignorance and conceits, lay aside your fears that I will be undone, for I shall not be moved."     SAMELLA LEWIS (1924 - ) Sunrise. Oil on linen canvas, 1962. 686x914 mm; 27x36 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist: private collection, Florida (1962). Samella Lewis and the owner were both on the faculty of SUNY Plattsburgh at the time. Sunrise is a striking and scarce example of Samella Lewis's embrace of abstract painting in the early 1960s, and her interest in non-Western symbolism. She began teaching at Plattsburgh in 1958, and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study at First Institute of Chinese Civilization and Tung Mai University in Taiwan in 1962. She continuing teaching Asian history at SUNY Plattsburgh until 1965 when she moved to Los Angeles. There she was awarded a National Defense Education Act post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Southern California, where she studied the Chinese language and Asian civilization.
