Maude Lewis Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1903 - d. 1970

Maud Lewis' artworks are an integral part of the folk-art movement in Canada. She faced adversity throughout life due to physical deformities resulting from juvenile arthritis. Maud Lewis' paintings of flowers, cats, scenic views, and her childhood home were light, colorful, and possessed a carefree, childlike view of the world despite her hardships.

She used this sense of wonder to paint the tiny home she shared with her husband, Everett, inside and out; it was eventually moved to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia as a permanent display piece. Richard Nixon's administration commissioned two Maud Lewis paintings for the White House gallery. Due to the popularity of her oil paintings, Maud Lewis prints of scenic Canada, simple pleasures, and wide-eyed animals are still in demand today. You can purchase other eye-catching landscape paintings for sale at Invaluable to add to your growing gallery.

Maud Lewis, Untitled (Hauling Maple Syrup)

        Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Maud Lewis, Untitled (Hauling Maple Syrup) Silkscreen on illustration board, Bill Ferguson, 1982. In 1962 Bill (Willard) Ferguson discovered Maud Lewis. He owned a gallery called The Ten Mile House in Bedford, Nova Scotia, where he sold Maud Lewis paintings and reproductions of her work. He legally owned the copyright to the entire collection of Maud Lewis from 1962 until 1996. After some time in Ontario, Ferguson returned to Nova Scotia in 1982 and began making additional silkscreens from his new gallery, Once-Upon-A-Time World Graphics in Dartmouth. The prints Ferguson made are all 9 colour images, made with paint and stencil one at a time, by hand. All boards were cut by hand. When Ferguson died, the government awarded the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia the copyright on any subsequent prints which they own to the present day. Maud Lewis (1901–1970) has become one of Canada’s most renowned artists, the subject of numerous monographs, novels, plays, documentaries, and even a feature film. She was born into relative comfort and obscurity, and died in poverty, though enjoying national fame. She overcame severe physical challenges to create a unique artistic style, and sparked a boom in folk art in her home province. Though she rarely left her tiny house, her works have travelled around the world, and in the decades since her death she has become an iconic figure, a symbol of Nova Scotia, and a beloved character in the popular imagination.

        Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Maud Lewis (Canadian, 1903-1970) “Covered Bridge in Winter”, oil on board, c.1966. Framed. Signed lower right. As stated by Alan Deacon, upon viewing and authenticating this work, “…the well developed blue loops places the work for me firmly in 1966. The original buyer might have paid $5.00 for the work. The Covered Bridge in Winter paintings are only found in the 1960's. In my opinion it is a good work and more decorative than earlier Covered Bridge paintings.”  The visible pencil marks beneath the paint and the green artist board are qualities that indicate of the works of Maud Lewis. The painting comes from a family collection in New Brunswick and was directly acquired from Maud Lewis herself. This is the first time the painting has been offered for sale.

Maud Lewis SUMMER OXEN WITH TULIPS The much loved folk artist Maud Lewis (1903-1970) is known for her colourful paintings of the landscape and communities around Digby, Nova Scotia. Despite the hardships of poverty and advancing arthritis, Maud created a body of charming and cheerful paintings that belied her situation – the fluffy white and black cats, the jaunty sleighs on wintry roads, the oxen festooned with bells and more. Her artwork can also be found in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. She is the subject several biographies and two National Film Board of Canada documentaries. In 2017, a biopic of her life titled Maudie was released starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan
