            Est: £500 - £800

John Frederick Lewis, RA,  British 1804-1876-  An old Spanish lady leading her mule;  pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, 18.5 x 26.6 cm.  Provenance:  Sir John and Lady Witt.  Drawings and Watercolours from the Collection of the late Sir John and Lady Witt, Sotheby's, London, 19 February 1987, lot 152.  Private Collection, UK.  Literature:  Major-General Michael Lewis C.B.E., 'John Frederick Lewis RA', 1978, p.73. no.250.  Note:  Lewis originally trained in the workshop of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) alongside Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873). He is principally recognised as an Orientalist painter, celebrated for his colourful and highly romanticised depictions of Cairo. The present work, apparently depicting a Spanish figure, may well be from Lewis's travels to Spain and Morocco between 1832 and 1834. This watercolour, with its sketchy background, places the focus squarely on the hunched figure with her donkey, with Lewis somehow managing to effectively evoke the expressions of morose resignation both of the standing figure and, perhaps more strikingly, of her donkey.

JOHN FREDERICK LEWIS ( England, 1804-1876). "Muleros", 1833. Pencil and watercolour on paper. With apocryphal signature Signed, dated and located in the lower right area. Measurements: 12.8 x 16.2 cm; 31 x 37 cm (frame). John Frederick Lewis RA was an English Orientalist painter. He specialised in Oriental and Mediterranean scenes in watercolour and oil, very often repeating the same composition in one version in each medium. He lived for several years in a traditional mansion in Cairo, and after his return to England in 1851 he specialised in highly detailed works showing both realistic genre scenes of Middle Eastern life. His careful depiction of Islamic architecture, furniture, screens and costumes set new standards of realism, which influenced other artists, including the leading French Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme in his later works. Lewis toured Europe in 1827, the year he began painting in watercolour, then travelled in Spain and Morocco between 1832 and 1834. The drawings he made were converted into lithographs by him and other artists, and published as Sketches and Drawings of the Alhambra, made during a residence in Granada in 1833-4 (1835) and Lewis's Sketches of Spain and Spanish Character (1836). For a time he became known as "Spanish Lewis", to distinguish him from "Indian Lewis", his brother Frederick Christian, who went to India in 1834. Lewis was one of the first travellers on what was to become a well-trodden route for English artists, though some ten years behind David Wilkie in Spain. David Roberts, who became the other leading British Orientalist, mainly through his lithographs, was in Spain and the Middle East at the same time as Lewis.
