BIOGRAPHY: Leopold Levy was born in Paris September 5, 1882. He failed the entrance examination to the Beaux-Arts de Paris, but regularly frequented the Louvre Museum. He is the friend of Charles Edmond Kayser, Andre Derain and Henri Verge-Sarrat. He worked from 1936 to 1949 in Istanbul where he directed the painting department of the School of Fine Arts, a city from which he brought back painted landscapes and portraits.Under the pseudonym of Leopold-Levy, he is the author of numerous etchings and participates in the engraved album of independent painters and engravers published by Albert Morance in 1925. His edition of De la nature (De rerum natura) by Lucrece (Paris, 1934), illustrated with 41 original etchings, is recognized as one of the most beautiful artist's books. Leopold Levy died December 12, 1966 at the Kremlin-Bicetre.

He was an art lover, spent time at Drouot auction house, collected works by Courbet and Corot, and passed on his taste of art to his son. Leopold-Levy lost his father at the age of eleven and decided to become a painter. He failed the entrance examination for the Ecole des Beaux- Arts in Paris, spent much time at the Louvre, and admired works by Cezanne and Renoir. He met the sculptor Charles Despiau and the painter Georges Linaret (who died suddenly in 1905). This group met to paint and talk in the Luxembourg Gardens. Leopold-Levy produced cartoons for several journals including Rire and Pele-Mele. In 1900, he exhibited his paintings for the first time at the Salon des Independants, in the group of fairground huts on Cours-la-Reine.In 1914, Leopold-Levy was mobilized to join the army. After the war, he left Paris and discovered Italy and Provence. Between 1920 and 1922, he met Jean Dufy and Jean Marchand in Cassis. The next year, in La Ciotat, Leopold Levy frequented Georges Braque and Andre Derain who lived near him. From 1927, he spent his time between Aix-en- Provence and Paris. He left for Istanbul in 1936 to run the painting department at the School of Fine Arts. During these years when he was teaching, he only exhibited his work twice, at the Art Academy in Istanbul and at the French consulate. Leopold-Levy returned to France in 1949 and spent his time between Provence and Paris.

    Natural Landscape is an original artwork realized by Léopold Lévy in the first decades of the XX Century. Original Etching on paper. Hand-signed in pencil on the lower right corner; numbered on the lower left corner. Edition of 110 prints. Very good conditions. Beautiful and fresh artwork representing a landscape with mountains and trees realized in black and white with contrasting strokes that define the whole composition. The work in hand-signed and numbered and has been realized by the French artist Léopold Lévy (Paris, 1882 - Kremlin-Bicêtre, 1989). His edition of De la nature (De Rerum Natura) illustrated with 41 original etchings is considered one of the most beautiful artist books.
