Édition originale et premier tirage de cette rare et belle monographie des calaos et cotingas, publiée en huit livraisons pour servir de supplément à l'Histoire naturelle des oiseaux d'Afrique de l'auteur, dont les six volumes parurent de 1799 à 1808. Ce premier tome, imprimé sur beau papier vélin, est le seul à avoir vu le jour. Il s'orne de 49 magnifiques planches d'oiseaux exotiques gravées sur cuivre, imprimées en couleurs et rehaussées au pinceau. « These plates were printed by Langlois, who did almost all the colour-printing for Levaillant. Troisième volume (supplémentaire), pour faire suite aux deux volumes de Levaillant. Ibid., 1837-1838. 3 volumes grand in-4, demi-chagrin vert, dos orné de motifs rocaille doré, tranches lisses (Reliure vers 1840). Magnifique et célèbre ouvrage sur les perroquets somptueusement illustré par Jacques Barraband. Le traité de Levaillant sur les psittacidés fut publié entre 1801 et 1805 en vingt-quatre livraisons tirées sur beau papier vélin en deux formats, in-folio et in-4, outre douze exemplaires au format in-plano. L'illustration de Jacques Barraband comprend 145 planches dessinées d'après nature, gravées par Bouquet et imprimées en couleurs par Langlois. Les coloris, profonds et nuancés, ont été retouchés à la main. Notre exemplaire est enrichi d'une aquarelle originale paraphée A. P., ayant servi à la gravure de la planche n°131, dont l'estampe est jointe. On y a également ajouté le prospectus de l'édition, inséré dans une fenêtre à la suite du titre du premier tome. On a joint à l'exemplaire, en reliure uniforme, le volume complémentaire de Bourjot Saint-Hilaire consacré aux espèces laissées inédites par Levaillant ou découvertes après la parution de son œuvre. Très rares sont les exemplaires réunissant à l'ouvrage de Levaillant cette continuation publiée trente ans plus tard, par le même éditeur, en vingt-neuf fascicules livrés entre 1835 et 1839. Imprimée également au format in-folio et au format in-4, elle est illustrée de 111 planches dessinées par Werner, lithographiées chez Bénard et Frey et coloriées avec soin. Ce sont donc, au total, 256 planches d'oiseaux exotiques en couleurs et une aquarelle originale qui ornent les trois volumes de notre exemplaire. L'ouvrage de Levaillant provient de la bibliothèque Jean-Baptiste Huzard (1842, I, n°2884), avec cachet ex-libris et une page autographe. Le catalogue de cette illustre collection, l'une des plus riches jamais rassemblées sur l'histoire naturelle, décrit les deux volumes en demi-maroquin rouge, avec 139 planches coloriées. En tête du premier se trouve une présentation de l'exemplaire par le collectionneur, à laquelle un propriétaire ultérieur des volumes a ajouté deux remarques concernant la gravure n°131, qu'il a fournie. The French master, Langlois, developed a superb technique to print in color called "a la poupee." After the printing process was complete, each plate was carefully highlighted by hand. Barraband and Levaillant collaborated on the best-known natural history work about parrots, Histoire Naturelle Des Perroquets. The pair would go on to collaborate on other great works including the on here, Histoire Naturelle Des Oiseaux Des Paradis et des Rolliers (Birds of Paradise) and Histoire Naturelle des Promerops (Toucans).
