Lerch handwritten notes by the artist; verso sketch of two figures ESTIMATE °€ 150 - 300 STARTING PRICE °€ 150 Franz Lerch was born 1895 in Vienna. First he worked in an administration office of a building firm and then he served as a soldier in the First World War. In 1918 he began to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the classes of Alois Delug, Josef Jungwirth and Karl Sterrer. In 1927 Lerch became a member of the artists association Hagenbund and also of the Viennese Secession. In 1933 he married Steffi Kraus and travelled with her to Sicily. In the 1930s he made also study trips to Paris and the Netherlands. Because of the Jewish background of his wife they had to emigrate during the Nazi regime, they fled to Great Britain and then in the USA. Before the departure he destroyed a large part of his works. In New York Lerch worked for the design company Printex and painted only in his leisure time. Franz Lerch died in 1977 in New York. Friends with Franz Theodor Csokor and promoted by Arthur Roessler. Member of the Free Movement artists' group and from 1925 to 1938 a member of the Hagenbund. Lived in Passau for a while, together with Georg Philipp Wörlen, Reinhard Hilker, Fritz Fuhrken and Franz Bronstert in the artist group Der Fels. From 1922 married to the classical philologist Gertrude Herzog-Hauser. During World War II in exile in Switzerland, wife and son fled to the Netherlands. From 1947 again involved in cultural reconstruction in Vienna. Secretary General and Vice President of the P.E.N. Clubs, Honorary President of the New Hagenbund. Stylistic development from classical, academic training through early Expressionism to New Objectivity. Themes like love, death, eros, narrative representations, religious themes. From the mid-1960s, travels to Africa, increasingly African motifs. Portrait of the artist's mother: Maria Hauser, née Linke.
