Andrew Lenaghan American, b. 1965 Blimp over Jarmulowsky Building from Adam's Roof, 2001 Signed Andrew Lenaghan, dated 7.2001 and inscribed as titled on the reverse Oil on panel 24 x 32 inches Provenance: Private collection George Adams Gallery, New York Exhibited: New York, George Adams Gallery, Andrew Lenaghan: Paintings, Dec., 2001-Jan., 2002 Literature: Andrew Lenaghan: Paintings. Exh. Cat., New York: George Adams Gallery, 2001, back cover, cover illus. A contemporary painter of the urban scene, Lenaghan rendered this image from the top of a friend's apartment building on Eldridge Street in Lower Manhattan, looking over the Lower East Side. Combining a plein-air method with a fastidious attention to detail, Lenaghan fills his scenes with a stillness out of keeping with the pace of city life. The blimp sailing calmly in the cloudless sky over the top of the Beaux-Arts Jarmulowsky Bank Building, completed in 1912 (three water towers on its roof), may evoke an undercurrent, recalling the military use of the first blimps during World War I and the failure of the bank in 1914, due to the withdrawals made by German investors in order to send relatives abroad. Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Andrew Lenaghan American, b. 1965 View South from Washington and Little West 12th Streets, Manhattan, 2001 Signed Andrew Lenaghan, dated 7-2001 and inscribed as titled on the reverse Oil on panel 24 x 48 1/2 inches Provenance: Private collection George Adams Gallery, New York Exhibited: New York, George Adams Gallery, Andrew Lenaghan: Paintings, Dec. 2001-Jan. 2002 Literature: Andrew Lenaghan: Paintings. Exh. Cat., New York: George Adams Gallery, 2001, p. 10-11, color illus. Called the "Canaletto of the outer boroughs" by the New Yorker Magazine, Lenaghan follows in the footsteps of the Italian eighteenth-century vedute painter by combining the panorama with the stage set. The details of buildings, the slick, wet streets, and the overhead weathered train tracks are united in the balanced circular arrangement. Avoiding the charm and vitality of Greenwich Village, Lenaghan turned his attention to a forsaken place of boarded buildings and cracked sidewalks, but the vivid street mural of pigs and monsters painted on a corrugated fence and the brilliance of the reflected buildings in the turbid water at the side of the street belie the feeling of quietude. The image reveals the Trade Towers in the middle distance, an eerie presence especially given that the work was created in July of 2001. The Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection of American Art
