David Lemon (1908-1997) was a sculptor, boat builder and founder of the Codfishery Art Colony in Belvedere, California. After establishing himself on the Seattle art scene in the 1930s, having studied with Alexander Archipenko, Lemon came to San Francisco in 1939 to work on the Golden Gate International Exposition. While in San Francisco, he assisted Benjamin Bufano and Sargent Johnson on WPA projects and exhibited his biomorphic table top sculptures at the Seattle Art Museum, East & West Gallery, the City of Paris, Rotunda Gallery, the Lucien Labaudt Gallery, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, as well as the Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions of the San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art. In 1940, Lemon and his wife, the artist Jerry O’Day, built studios at an an abandoned codfishery in Belvedere, CA in Marin County. They soon opened a gallery on the site, which eventually turned into an art colony.
