ORIGINAL ANTIQUE ETCHING c. 1870 Famous English Artist John Leech Illustration Approximately 10 1/2 inches high X 8 1/4 inches wide Including margins. Suitable for framing. Approximately ORIGINAL ANTIQUE ETCHING c. 1870 John Leech Etching Illustration titled: "The Death Of Gudge" from the novel "Christopher Tadpole" by Albert Smith. The etching comes from the book "Etchings By John Leech" published by William Tegg (England) ND (circa 1870). This book consists of John Leech original etchings that were used for three of the novels that Leech illustrated, two of which Tegg had published. The novels are: "Jack Bragg" by Theodore Hook, "Christopher Tadpole" by Albert Smith, & "Hector O'Halloran" by W. H. Maxwell. JOHN LEECH (1817-1864) was an English caricaturist & illustrator. He is best known for his work for "Punch", a humorous magazine for a broad middle-class audience, combining verbal and graphic political satire with light social comedy. Leech catered to contemporary prejudices, such as anti-Americanism & anti-semitism & supported acceptable social reforms. The purity and manliness of Leech's own character are impressed on his art. We find in it little of the exaggeration and grotesqueness, and none of the fierce political enthusiasm, of which the designs of his contemporaries James Gillray & George Cruishank are so full. The etching plate has light edge wear, one edge is rough where is was removed from the book, lower right corner is folded, & there is a library stamp, "Colchester Public Libraries", in one margin. The library stamp would covered by the mat when framed. Overall the etching's condition is Very Good. ALL ITEMS ARE GUARANTEED TO BE ACCURATELY DESCRIBED, NOT DEFECTIVE, & GENUINE. John Leech, "Punch" Cartoonist, Original Signed Watercolor and Ink Cartoon

          Est: $200 - $300

John Leech n.p., n.d. John Leech, "Punch" Cartoonist, Original Signed Watercolor and Ink Cartoon Signed art A charming hand-painted, captioned and signed cartoon on cardstock titled "Salmon Fishing," no place or date. The image itself measures 10" x 7.75", with overall dimensions of 12.5" x 10". Signed with initials "JL" at left corner of image. Light offsetting from prior framing and bearing light foxed spots, but overall in very good condition. The blank margin exhibits some damage, soiling and pencil notations, easily matted-out. This delicately-drawn and lighthearted cartoon shows two men salmon fishing. The cannier of the two sits on a rock on shore with a crook rather than a fishing pole school; he schools the surprised gentleman in the water: "I say! Old boy mind how you wade hereabouts; there are some tremendous holes, 14 or 15 feet deep." John Leech (1817-1864) was an English cartoonist and illustrator who made his name in creating cartoons for "Punch," for his cartoons about the Crimean War, which did much to sway the public's attitude towards Britain, and for his Illustrations for Charles Dickens' classic work, "A Christmas Tale." This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses. Approximately ORIGINAL ANTIQUE ETCHING c. 1870 John Leech Etching Illustration titled: "Mr Gudge & Young Arden" from the novel "Christopher Tadpole" by Albert Smith. The etching has light edge wear, one edge is rough where is was removed from the book, & there is a library stamp, "Colchester Public Libraries", in one margin. The library stamp would covered by the mat when framed. Overall the etching's condition is Very Good. ALL ITEMS ARE GUARANTEED TO BE ACCURATELY DESCRIBED, NOT DEFECTIVE, & GENUINE.
