Georges Emile Lebacq (Belgian, 1876-1950) Mais où sont les neiges d'antan (Where are the snows of yesteryear?), 1930 Oil on canvas 31-1/2 x 39-1/2 inches (80.0 x 100.3 cm) Signed and dated lower right: GLebacq / 1930 PROVENANCE: The artist; Thence by descent through the family to the present owner. EXHIBITED: Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées, Paris, "144ème Exposition Officielle des Beaux-Arts", Société des Artistes Français, 1931. LITERATURE: Le Salon 1931 - Société des Artistes Français, Paris, 1931, illustrated plate LXVI, p. 68. This romantic view depicts the Cloister of Carennac adjoining the Romanesque Eglise Saint-Pierre, located in the village of Carennac along the Dordogne in Périgord. The village grew up around this beautiful church and cloister belonging to the Cluniac priory that was founded in the middle of the 11th century. A magnificent tympanum retaining traces of original polychroming and a beautiful mise en tombeau adorn the church. The title of the painting comes from a verse in the "Ballade des dames du temps jadis" ("Ballad of the Ladies of Times Past"), a poem by François Villon that aches with longing for beauty that is no more. Georges Emile Lebacq (Belgian, 1876-1950) Haystack in Winter at Chamant (Oise), 1933 Oil on canvas 9-3/4 x 13 inches (24.8 x 33.0 cm) Signed and dated lower right: G. Lebacq / 1933 Heritage Auctions is pleased to present two works (lots 61386 and 61387) by the Belgian artist Georges Emile Lebacq, which come directly from the artist's estate. Lebacq was a talented painter and writer who, at various points in his career, found important avenues of expression in both media. Born in Jemappes (Mons) in 1876, Lebacq started painting at the age of 20 (his surviving juvenilia is preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Mons), and published poetry in the young avant-garde Symbolist journal, Le Coq Rouge. Through his association with the magazine, Lebacq met the noted Symbolist painter James Ensor who wrote many articles and editorials with him in the spirit of the journal. In 1899 Lebacq participated in the creation of the journal Le Thyrse in Brussels (the name of a Dionysian attribute celebrated by Charles Baudelaire in the Le Spleen de Paris) and wrote articles on painting and poetry. Having hesitated for some time between a career as a writer-poet and painter, Lebacq left Le Thyrse in 1907 to devote himself entirely to painting, embracing an Impressionist manner from 1907-1920. He traveled with his wife and children, initially to Algeria, Italy (particularly Venice), and to the Middle East (particularly Palestine and Turkey), before settling in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France on the French Riviera near Nice. He stayed at the Villa des Orchidées, a mile from the magnificent olive grove, the Domaine des Collettes, which Pierre-Auguste Renoir purchased on June 28, 1907, to save it from being felled. Lebacq painted a number of landscapes on the Renoir property, which can be seen at the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer. In 1915, during World War I, Lebacq volunteered for service at the age of nearly 40, and joined the Calais regiment. In 1917 he was assigned to La Panne (Grand Quartier-Général) as an army painter in the famous "Section artistique de l'armée belge en Campagne"-a group of 26 artists which included Fernand Allard Olivier, Alfred Bastien, Leon Huygens, Armand Massonet, and Pierre Paulus. He participated in the exhibition of painters of the Belgian Front in 1917 in Switzerland. Sorely affected by the war, he returned to Bruges to find the workshop he had maintained there vandalized, and thirteen years' worth of work destroyed and/or stolen by the Germans. After roughly 1920, when he sought formal training at the Academie Julian in Paris, Lebacq's work began moving into a more Post-Impressionistic direction, which can be seen in the present still life with its powerful debts to a number of modernists including Cezanne, as well as Matisse and the Fauves in its attention to decorative patterning. A versatile artist and gifted colorist, Lebacq painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, worked in both pastel and watercolor, and later in his career produced stained glass for church interiors. He spent most of his later career in France. HID04901242017

Lebacq / 1919 Heritage Auctions is pleased to present two works (lots 61386 and 61387) by the Belgian artist Georges Emile Lebacq, which come directly from the artist's estate.
