Henri Le Sidaner Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Lithographer, Landscape painter, Flower painter

(b Port-Louis, Mauritius, 7 Aug 1862; d Versailles, 1939). French painter and pastellist. He studied briefly under Alexandre Cabanel at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1880, but his admiration for the Impressionists led him to reject this academic training and to work alone from 1882 to 1887 at Etaples in northern France. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won third prize in 1891, and later at the Salon de la Société Nationale. The subject-matter and smoothly painted surfaces of some of Le Sidaner’s early paintings, such as Sunday (1898; Douai, Mus. Mun.), a picture of evanescent young girls in long white dresses against a very low horizon, caused him to be compared with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but also allied him with the Symbolists. From 1900, when he moved to Beauvais and later to Gerberoy, Oise, he began to paint urban landscapes and gardens, often in a deserted state. He began at that time to favour broken brushwork reminiscent of Georges Seurat, while working primarily from memory rather than from direct observation. After a stay in Venice in 1905 he painted a series of views, such as Bridge of Sighs (1906; Paris, Petit Pal.), that were hugely successful when exhibited in London and at the Salon de la Société Nationale in 1906.

(1862 Port Louis/Mauritius - 1939 Paris) "Après l'office". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated (18)87. Artist's suppliers stamp by M. Chabod, Paris (prior 1892). Probably exhibited 1887 in Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. A second version is mentioned in the catalogue raisonné by Yann Farinaux Le Sidaner under no. 11.

-- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Yann Farinaux-Le Sidaner, March 2023 Throughout the 38 years spent at Gerberoy, Le Sidaner never ceased inviting friends from around the world to visit his gardens. The last stage of the walk around the gardens was always the little terrace that overlooked the property, which he had erected at the foot of a church, from which point there was a breathtaking view of the old rooftops of Gerberoy. The artist adored the diversity and personality of these old houses with their threadbare roofs so typical of Picardy. In 1904, having decided to transform a large old building in his yard to make it into his studio, so he exchanged new tiles with the villagers, "The artist really surprised people”, reported the critic Camille Mauclair, “by asking them for old tiles eaten away with moss and offering them the exchange with beautiful, brand new, very red tiles.” Few artists have been able to express all the charm and poetry of the ridgeline of our old buildings like him. Around 1936, the “pilgrim of old France”, as Mauclair called him, dedicated his final series to Gerborean roofs, of which La Petite ville, jewel of the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, remains the highlight. Our enhanced drawing served as a preparatory study for the canvas, Les Toits ensoleillés, painted the same year. As is often the case, the artist did not hesitate to disguise reality in order to obtain the desired impression, which here becomes the disorder of a sunny vision. HENRI LE SIDANER (1862-1939) La Rue de l'Eglise à Villefranche-sur-Mer, 1928 La Rue de l’Eglise à Villefranche-sur-Mer, datable to 1928. Oil on canvas 61 x 50,3 cm, signed lower right. On stretcher verso with old paper label, thereon typed inscription (faded): Musée Galliéra / Rétrospective / Henri Le Sidaner. Confirmation of authenticity from Yann Farinaux-le-Sidaner, Paris, dated 18 April 2013 (Nr. LS 459); According to a kind note from Yann Farinaux-Le-Sidaner the eponymous painting which is presented in the catalogue raisonné (no. 646) is identical with the present work (In Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum Madrid). It was reworked by the artist - as he quite often did - and then signed at the lower right, in contrast to the first version, which was signed at the bottom left. A black and white photograph documenting the prior state of the painting was published in the catalogue raisonné. It came from the Galerie Georges Petit, where the artist was under contract during his lifetime. There are two smaller preparatory studies of the motif in oil (Farinaux-Le-Sidaner 1207, 24 x 16 cm, and 1209, 40.7 x 25.4 cm). Le Sidaner's career is usually divided into an initial realist period lasting until 1893, followed by a phase linked to Symbolism (1894-1899) and an intimist period in the first years of the 20th century, up until the Great War. In the decade after the conflict, the painter created the most brilliant part of his mature oeuvre. Throughout the 1920s, Le Sidaner depicted the poetic suggestions of the most varied corners of France; from his own garden in Gerberoy to the park in Versailles, from the scenery of Brittany to that of the south of France. The master of suffused colours was moving away from the hazy and diffused glow which had characterised the largest part of his works. Gradually, in his paintings light became less indeterminate, and the range of colours became brighter, more intense.
