GIUSEPPE LAZZERINI (Italy, 1831-1895). "Pales, goddess of cattle", ca. 1860. Carrara marble. Signed at the bottom.

      Est: €18,000 - €20,000

GIUSEPPE LAZZERINI (Italy, 1831-1895). "Pales, goddess of cattle", ca. 1860. Carrara marble. Signed at the bottom. Measurements: 113 x 90 x 68 cm (natural size). The delicate workmanship and classicist inspiration of this sculptural group were characteristic attributes of the plastic work of the sculptor Giuseppe Lazzerini. The Roman divinity of the countryside, Pales, is shown as a beautiful young woman with curly hair adorned with a floral garland, feeding a small sheep with lettuce leaves. Pales was the protector of the land and livestock, and although in texts she was often described as a male god, artists have usually depicted her as a woman. In the present sculpture, she is characterized as a simple girl rather than as an imposing goddess. Her body forms are harmonious, with small, turgid breasts, soft curves and gracefully arched torso. A draped cloth covers her pubis. Born in Carrara, Lazzerini studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara from 1848 under the tutelage of Ferdinando Pellicias. In 1852 he won 2nd prize for a relief entitled "Achille che trascina il corpo di Patroclo". In 1853, after obtaining a scholarship for his bas-relief entitled "Patrocloche uccide Sarpedonte", he left Carrara to work in Rome with Pietro Tenerani. In 1856 he finished his work "La Fanciulla che intreccia", which is in the Accademia di Carrara. Lazzerini then began working in his brother-in-law's workshop. They produced public monuments, statues, portrait busts and decorative works. Lazzerini was director of the Carrara Academy from 1889 to 1893, later becoming an honorary professor. Lazzerini produced a plaster figure similar to the one in this sale, depicting a classical woman, although in this case the figure is seated and holding a garland of flowers, now in the Accademia di Belle Arti in Carrara, entitled "Fanciulla che intreccia una ghirlanda" (p. 110 fig 467, Panzetta).

PROFESSOR GIUSEPPE LAZZERINI (ITALIAN 1831-1895) PAUL AND VIRGINIA white Carrara marble figure group, on a veined white marble column, signed 'Prof. Giuseppe Lazzerini fece Carrara (Group 104cm high; column 100cm high) Qty: (2) Provenance: Sotheby's 19th and 20th Century Sculpture, lot 141, London, 4 June, 1998 where purchased by the vendor's family and thence by descent Note: Guiseppe Lazzerini descended from a family of sculptors in Carrara and in 1848 entered the Carrara Accademia di Belle Arti under the direction of Ferdinando Pelliccia. While there he won the Rome scholarship which sent him to work in the studio of Pietro Tenerani, where he completed a statue of St. Sebastien followed by Hagar and Ishmael. Lazzerini returned to Carrara to work in, and eventually supervise, the family studio where he produced a wide range of his own works as well as works of other sculptors. His sculpture demonstrated the strong influence of Tenerani, which he in turned passed on to students of the Carrara Academy for which he was the director from 1889-1893. Lazzerini's sculpture Paul and Virginia is based on the popular romance novel by Jacques-Henri Bernadin de Saint-Pierre, first published in 1788. Set in the years before the French Revolution, it tells the story of the idyllic childhoods of the title characters and the fate of a child of nature corrupted by the artificial sentimentality of the French upper classes in the late eighteenth century. Born and raised on the island of Mauritius, John and Virginia are childhood sweethearts who are separated when Virginia is sent to Paris at the behest of a wealthy aunt, with the promise of an inheritance and education. While there she is miserably treated and unhappy, and is pressured to marry a nobleman but refuses, vowing to return to Paul and her simpler, more authentic life. On her return journey the ship enters a hurricane within sight of the island and is wrecked just off the coast. Paul tries in vain to swim out and rescue her, but fails, and Virginia is drowned. Lazzerini chose as his subject the moment in the story when the two young lovers lose their way in a remote part of the island and are confronted by a river which Paul helps Virginia to cross.

A Victorian white marble statue, a young girl

      Est: £5,000 - £7,000

A Victorian white marble statue, a young girl sitting on a tree stump holding a baby bird in one hand, its nest in the other, signed 'Prof G Lazzerini, Carrara', 109cm high Professor Giuseppe Lazzerini (Italian 1831-1895) His work 'La Fanciulla che intreccia', can be found in the Accademia di Carrara. He worked with his brother and they produced public monuments, statues and portrait busts and he was the Director of the Academy in Carrara from 1889 to 1893. The vendor's mother remembered the angel (as they always called her) arriving in their house when she was a child in the 1930s. The vendor's grandfather was an inveterate gambler. He had a bet with the local stonemason on which he staked his house. Needless to say, he lost, and his wife was distraught; they had three small children and she had no idea how they were going to manage. She went to see the stonemason and begged to let them keep their home and not put the family on the street. The stonemason then offered to let her husband win it back with interest on another bet. Luckily for the family, her husband won the bet and the interest was the pick of anything in the stonemason's yard. He chose the angel.
