BLANCHE LAZZELL Red and Blue Petunias.

            Est: $15,000 - $20,000

BLANCHE LAZZELL Red and Blue Petunias. Color woodcut on Japan paper, 1955-56. 307x355 mm; 12 1/8x14 inches, full margins. Signed, titled and dated "1956" in pen and ink, lower margin, and signed, dated, titled and inscribed "No. 2" in pen and ink, verso. A very good impression of this scarce woodcut with strong colors. We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years. According to Lazzell's record book, this color woodcut was created in Provincetown and the number of proofs was not recorded. Lazzell (1878-1956) was an American Modernist printmaker and a member of the pioneering wood block print society (the first of its kind in America) known as the Provincetown Printers. This small group of printmakers came together in 1915 in the artistic community of Provincetown, on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, which had quickly become a destination for both avant-garde American artists and artists living in Europe who were fleeing the turmoil of World War I. The group remains most noteworthy for having innovated the white-line woodcut print, or the Provincetown Print. Inspired by 19th century Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcuts, these artists carved their designs onto a single block, rather than multiple blocks in the western printmaking tradition, and inked each section with a different color. The small grooves between each segment create the distinctive white lines of these woodcuts. Bror J. O. Nordfeldt, also a member of the Provincetown Printers, developed the technique, but Lazzell is considered the master of the white-line woodcut. Renowned for her devotion to the technique and for the sophistication of her work, as well as the influence of abstraction and Cubism in her work, she gained popularity not only in America but also in Europe, where she first exhibited in 1923 at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. Est: $20,000 - $30,000

BLANCHE LAZZELL (1878-1956) Cape Cod Cottage; The Coffee Pot. Original carved wood block, double-sided, painted in color inks. 300x360x25 mm; 12x14 1/4x1 inches. Inscribed "Blanche Lazzell" and titled "108. Cape Cod Cottage 109. Coffee Pot" in ink along the block edges. 1936. Provenance: the artist; gift to her niece, Frances Reed; private collection, Chicago. Lazzell carved this block on both sides to make color woodcuts, though she printed from it infrequently before retiring it to its current state as a painted wood block. Impressions printed from either side of this wood block are exceedingly scarce. According to Lazzell's record book, only 2 impressions of Cape Cod Cottage and 3 impressions of Coffee Pot were printed by the artist. We have not found any impressions from this block at auction in the past 30 years. Another original carved wood block, double-sided, by Lazzell was sold at Sotheby's, New York, May 1, 2008, lot 13. Clarkson Blocks 108 and 109. Lazzell was an American painter, printmaker and designer. Known especially for her colorful woodcuts, she was an early modernist artist, at the vanguard of the avant-garde in American art, bringing elements of Cubism and abstraction into her craft. Lazzell made color woodcuts under the auspices of the WPA during the 1930s, among them one of her most celebrated works, The Blue Jug , 1937, the design of which is similar to The Coffee Pot on one side of the current work. Lazzell was also a participant in a landmark exhibition of WPA works in 1936, "New Horizons in American Art," curated by Holger Cahill, who was the national director of the WPA.

            BLANCHE LAZZELL Tulips.

            Est: $20,000 - $30,000

BLANCHE LAZZELL Tulips. Color woodcut on cream laid Japan paper, 1920. 305x295 mm; 12x11 1/2 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately only 11. Signed in pencil, lower left, and inscribed "(4) Tulips -20" in pencil, verso. A very good impression of this extremely scarce print. According to Lazzell's record book, this color woodcut was created in Provincetown in 1920 and she recorded only 11 proofs from the block.
