Carbon pencil heightened in white on board. 140x180 mm; 5 1/2x7 inches, on 12x9-inch board. Initialed "RL" in lower right image. Laid into matte and archivally framed. A copy of the book accompanies the lot. Provenance: Acquired by current owner from Illustration House, Inc., circa 2009. The full caption reads "Uncle Phineas was wrapped up most comfortably, smoking his pipe and talking pleasantly with Mother and Father."

Taped at the top and is not laid down. Sheet size 11 ½" x 14". From the Included with the print is an original newspaper article illustrating the print. The etching is inscribed to Chester Price's daughter Barbara. From the estate of Chester Price (the gentleman in the photograph with the printing press wheel). From Askart: "Robert Lawson, born 1891 in New York City, was a versatile artist who explored many avenues of expression. Lawson was raised in Montclair, New Jersey and later attended the New York School of Fine Art. He served in the camouflage section of the 40th Engineers at the Front during World War I, and shared a dugout with the etcher Kerr Eby. He was an active member of the art colony in Westport, Connecticut. Lawson was a prolific book illustrator, having illustrated more than forty books by other authors, and wrote and illustrated seventeen books of his own. "Ben and Me", "Rabbit Hill" and "The Story of Ferdinand the Bull" are just a few of the many books he wrote and illustrated. Lawson was the first award winner of both the Caldecott Medal in 1941 and the Newberry Medal in 1945. Few know of Lawson's active illustration for magazines such as "The Ladies' Home Journal", "Harper's Monthly", "The Designer", "This Week", "The Delineator", "Pictorial Review", and "Everybody's". For these magazines, he specialized mainly in fantasy stories and fairy tales. Using similar subjects in his etchings, one of his plates won the John Taylor Arms Prize of the Society of American Etchers.

"Centaur in the garden," etching, 123 x 174 mm, signed and limited to 100 copies. Prior to illustrating the children's classic The Story of Ferdinand (1936), Robert Lawson tried to support himself with a charming series of fine etchings of elves and other fanciful subjects. Few sold. Although the edition states 100 copies, it is unlikely that that many were ever printed. Lawson eventually became one of the most honored and beloved of modern American children's book author-illustrators. He is the only one to ever win both the Caldecott and Newbery Medals.
