  • D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) English, (2) Books
    Mar. 30, 2025

    D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) English, (2) Books

    Est: $60 - $80

    D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) English, (2) Books. These two books were written by David Hutton Lawrence (1885 - 1930), an English novelist, short story writer, poet, and playwright, and they are titled Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Birds, Beasts, And Flowers.  Size: (largest) 8 9/16 X 6 3/4 in.  #6495 .  Lady Chatterley’s Lover was first published privately in 1928 in Italy and then in Paris in 1929, and this edition has beautiful maroon boards with gilt lettering and gilt-ruled boards, decorated endpapers and gilt-ruled borders on the front paste-down, followed by blank endpapers, a half-title, the title page which says it was published in 1933 by the Odyssey Press in Hamburg, Paris, and Bologna, there’s an open letter written by Frieda Lawrence after the copyright page - she was the wife of D H Lawrence - and 360 pages of text.  It tells the story of a woman trapped in an unfulfilling marriage, it gained notoriety because of its explicit descriptions of sex, its portrayal of a passionate relationship between a woman of the upper class and a working class gamekeeper, it used vulgar language, according to many critics, and it depicted sexual acts and female pleasures that were considered shocking and obscene at the time. The book even had to go to court to escape censorship.  The book measures 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text. There are light scratches on the covers and corner creases on pages 35 to 41, and that’s it. A very attractive copy of this controversial novel by D H Lawrence.  The second book is titled Birds, Beasts, And Flowers, and it’s a first American edition published in New York in 1923 by Thomas Seltzer. The book is a collection of poetry by Lawrence that is written in free verse and delves into themes of nature, existence, and the interconnectedness of life, and it explores both the beauty and complexity of the natural world and the intricate relationships between humans and the animal kingdom.  The book is beautifully bound, with a green morocco spine and light green cloth, five raised bands and gilt lettering on the spine, beautiful marbled endpapers, then salmon-colored endpapers, a half-title, the title page says it was published by Thomas Seltzer in 1923 and the copyright page is dated 1923, which makes this a first edition - the dates on the title and copy pages match and there is just a single date on both pages - there are three pages of Contents (vii - ix), and 180 pages of text.  The book measures 8 9/16 x 6 3/4 inches wide and is in great condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, with faint brown spots on the first few pages and watermarks along the bottom of some pages from the middle on, and still a very attractive copy of this second Lawrence title.

  • Lawrence (D.H., 1885-1930). A needlework panel worked for Lady Ottoline Morrell, 1916
    Mar. 13, 2025

Lawrence (D.H., 1885-1930). A needlework panel worked for Lady Ottoline Morrell, 1916

    Est: £500 - £800

Lawrence (D.H., 1885-1930). A needlework panel worked for Lady Ottoline Morrell, 1916 * Lawrence (D.H., 1885-1930). A needlework panel embroidered by D.H. Lawrence & Frieda Lawrence for Lady Ottoline Morrell, 1916, worked in coloured silk threads, in red, orange, yellow, navy, purple, brown, and grey, using stem stitch, with a phoenix rising from a flaming circle, stitched motif 18 x 24 cm (7 x 9.5 ins), on a black cotton ground (with several tears), 53 x 56 cm (21 x 22 ins), expertly consolidated with fine black net by the Royal School of Needlework and stitch-mounted to a black fabric-covered board (in 2009), 59 x 58 cm (23.25 x 22.75 ins), together with a sheet of headed notepaper '10 Gower Street W.C1' written in sepia ink by Lady Ottoline Morrell 'Worked for me by D.H. Lawrence & his wife Frieda. 1916', 18 x 18 cm (7 x 7 ins) QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Lady Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938); her daughter Julian Vinogradoff (née Morrell, 1906-1989); thence by descent. Lady Ottoline Morrell secured an introduction to D.H. Lawrence from a mutual friend in 1915, after reading three of his 'very remarkable' books (The Prussian Officer, Sons & Lovers and The White Peacock). The author became a great friend of Ottoline's and he and his wife, Frieda, became frequent visitors to Garsington Manor, her Oxfordshire home (although later there was a temporary schism in their relationship when Lawrence portrayed Ottoline as Hermione Roddice in Women in Love). Garsington at the time of WWI and just after was a haven for like-minded souls - literary figures, artists, philosophers - who wished to embrace a new modernist order of pacifism, feminism, and artistic and sexual freedom, whilst at the same time moving away from the mechanised commercialism of the early 20th century. Although best known for his novels, Lawrence was also a painter, and produced such items as hand-made boxes and this needlework. Like Lady Ottoline who, the year before, gifted an embroidered counterpane to the Lawrences, he loved the concept of using his inherent skills to embue an object with his own character and feelings. Ahead of his time, D.H. Lawrence felt that a sinister materialistic culture was causing the decay of society as well as exploiting the world's natural resources. The phoenix became an iconic symbol of Lawrence’s intellectual and spiritual struggles; he adopted it as a life-long and dearly-held symbol of regeneration. The phoenix symbolised the author’s belief that man must die away from the disasters of mass industrialism in order to be reborn into a more complete existence. Lawrence designed and drew the phoenix which appeared on the front cover of some of his works, and in his fiction he repeatedly explores the theme of regeneration and individual renewal. In fact, in his 1925 novella St Mawr there is a character named Phoenix, who helps lead the heroine of the story to the possibility of a new life. In 1929, the year before he died, Lawrence wrote a poem entitled 'Phoenix': "Are you willing to be sponged out, erased, cancelled, made nothing?/Are you willing to be made nothing? dipped into oblivion?/ If not, you will never really change./The phoenix renews her youth only when she is burnt, burnt alive, burnt down to hot and flocculent ash./Then the small stirring of a new small bub in the nest with strands of down like floating ash shows that she is renewing her youth like the eagle, immortal bird." When Lawrence died in Vence, in the south of France, Frieda commissioned a headstone inlaid with coloured pebbles in the shape of a phoenix.

The first printing of Lady Chatterley's Lover was between April and June 1928 in a run of 1000 numbered and signed copies. Est: €1,000 - €1,500

‘I'll see you get your copy of Lady C.’ LAWRENCE D.H.: (1885-1930) English Writer. A good A.L.S., D. H. Lawrence, one page, Hotel Beau Rivage, Bandol, France, 28th November 1928, to Miss. Watson. Lawrence forwards his correspondent the Swedish agreement (no longer present) and enquires 'Have you made up a new agreement with Kippenberg, or aren't we signing one?'. The author further states 'Now Orioli is ill, and I hope it hasn't developed seriously - if it has I shall have to go to Florence' and concludes 'But don't worry, I'll see you get your copy of Lady C. - even if there is a bit of delay'. Autograph letters by Lawrence referring to one of his most famous, and controversial, works, Lady Chatterley's Lover, are rare and desirable. Very slightly irregularly cut to the upper edge and with some light, extremely minor age wear, VG Giuseppe 'Pino' Orioli (1884-1942) Florentine bookseller, best known for privately publishing the unexpurgated first edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover, of which around 1000 copies were released in July 1928. The Swedish agreement to which Lawrence refers is in connection with The Woman who Rode Away and Other Stories which was published by Martin Secker in 1928.

    LAWRENCE D.H.: (1885-1930)

    Est: €1,200 - €2,000

LAWRENCE D.H.: (1885-1930) English Writer. A good A.L.S., with his initials D.H.L., two pages, 4to, Scandicci, Florence, n.d. ('Friday', 28th October 1927), to Else von Richthofen, his sister-in-law ('My dear Else'). Lawrence writes of his current life and work in Italy, in part, '….here the sun is too hot, makes one tired & feels like earthquakes. Still it is beautiful. We got home safely with all the spoil…..we drank the Kirsch from the little yellow glasses when the Wilkinsons were here yesterday. I am much better, I eat more joyfully, & take the Brust-thee. Imagine, one must let it boil slowly for hours. I do believe it is good, better than all the medicines. I am already doing a story, and dabbing at my picture of five negresses - called The Finding of Moses……I had a letter from Curtis Brown, saying that next year, in November, our contract with Kippenberg comes to an end, & then we can leave him and go to a different publisher. Also that he, Kip-, said in a letter of 1923, that he would gladly agree that you should do the translations. Curtis Brown have the letter. Now I have written Kippenberg to ask him what exactly he intends to do next year, with regard to my work. We'll see if we can't have our own way in this matter, & you shall translate The Plumed Serpent if you wish…..' A couple of very light, extremely minor stains, VG Else von Richthofen (1874-1973) German Social Scientist, a cousin of Manfred von Richthofen. In 1922 Lawrence travelled in the United States of America and Mexico and wrote of his time on a small mountain ranch near Taos, New Mexico, in The Plumed Serpent (1926) and Mornings in Mexico (1927). He was forced to leave Mexico in October 1925, having come close to death when seriously ill with malaria, and settled near Florence.
