      "A Portrait of John Holmes, 1818", oil on canvas, signed and titled verso (with an attempted rub-out). Housed in what may be the original gilt pine molded frame. OS: 40" x 32", SS: 35 1/2" x 27 1/2". Cleaned, fine craquelure, stretcher impression, scuff upper left to painting and frame. John Holmes (1773-1843) was a US Congressman and Senator from Maine who was an instrumental advocate in Statehood for Maine in 1820.
