        DESCRIPTION: Bisque sculpture entitled "Solitude" after John Lawlor depicting a seated half-nude woman next to a stork. Piece is titled on the front; marked on reverse side: "J. LAWLOR Sculpt" and "ART-UNION OF LONDON". Piece has markings and holes in reverse suggesting conversion to and from a lamp base. Finely modeled bisque Minton parian ware figure "Solitude", issued by the Art Union of London as a prize, depicting a seated female figure on arocky seat with a heron, Titled to the base and impressed "J. Lawlor/Sculp" and "Art-Union/of/London/1852". Note: The original piece was exhibited at the London Exhibition of 1851 and appears in "The ParianPhenomenon: A Survey of Victorian Parian Porcelain Statuary & Busts" edited by Paul Atterbury, publisher Richard Dennis, 1989, page 72, figure 106.         John Lawlor, (ca.1820 - 1901), a sculpted plaster portrait relief of Miss Vandenhoff, in Neoclassical style, dated 1859, the actress shown in profile, with a laurel wreath in her tied hair, inscribed J.LAWLOR SC. 1859 beneath the truncation, the circular panel inset in to a giltwood slip with title in rubric, glazed and within an oak frame, 42 x 42cm overall John Lawlor, born in Dublin was a sculptor and medallist, elected to the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1861. He spent most of his career working in London, specialising in poetic subjects and portrait busts. He is noted for various statues in London, his 1881 bronze statues of Patrick Sarsfield in the grounds of St John's Cathedral in Limerick, and the 1889 statue of Bishop Delany at St Mary's Cathedral in Cork The Liverpool-born actress Charlotte Vandenhoff, daughter of the actor John Vandenhoff, made her first appearance on stage as Juliet at Drury Lane in 1836. She played the role again at Covent Garden in 1840 and also on tour in Britain and in America where she performed in 1839 and 1858
