MAURICE LAURO (1878-?). AUTOMOTO. Circa 1930. 46½x31 inches, 118x78¾ cm. Les Successeurs de Hachard & Cie., [Paris].

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

MAURICE LAURO (1878-?) AUTOMOTO. Circa 1930. 46½x31 inches, 118x78¾ cm. Les Successeurs de Hachard & Cie., [Paris]. Condition B+: minor creases, abrasions and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds; minor creases and flaking at edges. Mounted directly to linen. Lauro was predominantly a magazine illustrator who specialized in fashion. This poster for a bicycle company highlights both the fashion of the fit young pair of riders, and the trendy sport they are about to play, as they hold their tennis rackets high. No doubt, their level of comfort and confidence is an indication of how these bicycles are easily handled with just one hand on the handlebars. L'Affiche Tennis 71, Le Tennis A l'Affiche np, Art Deco p. 189.

ARTIST: MAURICE LAURO (1878-?) SIZE: 29 1/2 x 41 1/4 in./74.8 x 105 cm PRINTER: Imp. Devambez, Paris DESCRIPTION: In one of the finest travel posters ever created, Lauro perfects a vision of Trouville's boardwalk as the place to see and be seen in the 1920s. With the famed Casino in the background, every detail here is perfect: from the beauty mark on the foremost flapper's cheek, to the exaggerated hat-doffing of the gentleman, to the whiplash of two college lads, one éminence grise, and a German Shepherd—and don’t overlook the au courant stylings of the women's footwear. All things contribute to the chic, dynamic, head-turning ambiance of France's first resort town, a favorite of Monet, Flaubert, Proust, and Duras—now thoroughly fashioned as a place for the Great Gatsby to make an appearance. The artist, Lauro, is also known for his Le Rire caricatures and film posters. (Art Deco; Travel)

On a sunny day, two friends are on their way to play tennis. They are riding on the shining bicycles produced by Automoto, and happily waving the tennis rackets to us. Their tanned skin and big smiles are giving the bicycle manufacturer a healthy image. Automoto was a French bicycle and motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1902. It was based in St Etienne, the "cycling capital of France", and had multiple factories. It joined with the Peugeot Group in 1930 and was fully absorbed by 1962. The firm specialized in the manufacture of high-class and sturdy motorcycles with its own engines, and also proprietary engines made by Chaise, Zurcher, J.A.P., Villers and, after 1945, A.M.C. Maurice Lauro (1878-?) was a French printmaker. Although there is limited amount of information about the artist, he is known for a series of poster he had done for the Automoto company. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

        Trouville. 1927

        Est: $6,000 - $7,000

Artist: MAURICE LAURO (1878-?) Size: 29 1/4 x 41 3/8 in./74.2 x 105 cm Imp. Devambez, Paris In this wonderfully droll design for an English Channel resort near Le Havre, a couple of promenaders on the boardwalk are understandably turning heads -- they've even made a young gentleman forget his own companion. Considered one of the finest travel posters ever created, Lauro's easy way with beautiful people shows why he was best known for his film posters, but he was also quite at home with caricature (Le Rire, from 1907 through 1908, where he began his career) and book illustrations.

        MAURICE LAURO (1878-?) CHAMPIGNEULLES. 1928.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,500

61 1/2x45 1/2 inches. Gossart, Paris. Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds; staining in lower left corner; creases in margins and image. Lauro was a successful magazine illustrator who specialized in fashion. Among the few posters he designed are two of the most appealing tourist posters of the roaring twenties, Trouville (see Swann, Chassaing Collection, catalogue 1978, lot 64), and Cannes / Casino de la Mediterrannee. He also executed several commercial commissions that are equally charming, all featuring young, vibrant, trendy people. Here he is attempting a different approach, depicting a close-up of two glasses of beer held by unseen, smoking men. His concept is good in that the strict use of the diagonal is graphically efficient, the typography follows the curve of the café table, and the background represents the French national colors. Not in Litfass.
