Attr. Joseph Lauber Monumental Stained Glass Window

          Est: $50,000 - $100,000

Attr. Joseph Lauber (1855-1948), Monumental Stained Glass Windows, "Sermon on the Mount," Circa 1905-1914. Large group of magnificent religious stained glass windows forming a scene of Jesus with a glowing halo, seated and delivering a sermon to various groups of people spread out in front of him, he has one arm raised and the other by his side; the various groups of men, women and children are standing and sitting attentively before him as he speaks. In the distance are trees, water, mountains and a beautifully multicolored cloudy sky. The four main windows utilize heavy drapery glass, multiple plating, acid burned flash glass, used for highlights on the back of the windows, with reverse painted enamel decorated features including faces, heads, hands, legs & feet. The leading has been solder coated to avoid any visible solder joints. Above the main windows is a grouping that includes windows with Bible passages. Joseph Lauber apprenticed under John La Farge and worked for Tiffany Studios from 1888-1892; he was a talented artist having a range of works from windows, sculpture, mural painting and mosaic design. These windows postdate Lauber's employment with Tiffany Studios. These windows have been professionally removed and crated. The windows have been removed from the wooden frames and even though extreme care was taken in the removal process, as with all removals of this type, there may be some glass & leading damage which is not visible in the pictures provided. The frames remain at the church & are not included with the windows. Fully assembled approximate dimensions: 16 feet wide x 25 feet high.

Swiss composer (1864-1952) Autograph letter, signed "Joseph Lauber", 2 pages, 4to; Les Plans, 13 August, no year. Langer collection. Good condition. Addressed to Paul Langer; Lauber complains about the difference between sportsman, easily enriched, in his opinion, thanks to human vanity, and the intellectual (clearly referring to himself and Langer), reduced to begging to give to the world worthy works. He discuss further the financial problem arising from a project at which they are working together. Possibly referring to the oratorium Le drame de Saul de Tarse, Oratorio for tenor, baryton, solo, choir and orchestra, composed to celebrate te 1900th anniversary of St. Paul arrival in Europe, with Lauber's music and text by Langer, published in 1950 or 1951.
