(63.5 x 76.2cm) Provenance The Artist. By descent in the Lathrop family. Acquired directly from the above. Property from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk, New Jersey. Exhibited "Masterworks of American Impressionism: Edward Redfield and the New Hope Group,” James A. Michener Art Museum, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, March 26-September 4, 1994. Literature Dr. Thomas Folk, The Pennsylvania Impressionists, Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, Madison, New Jersey and Associated University Press, London, 1997, no. p.n., plate 5 (illustrated). Note A founding member of the New Hope Art Colony, William Langson Lathrop’s work remains among the most notable of the Pennsylvania Impressionist movement. Lathrop received his formal art education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in Philadelphia. In 1916, he along with five other local artists (Charles Rosen, Daniel Garber, Morgan Colt, and Rae Sloan Bredin) formed "The New Hope Group.” Lanthrop’s remarkable ability to capture the play of light and atmosphere in his landscapes sets his work apart from his colleagues. His unique blend of Impressionism and Tonalism creates a visual language that resonates with viewers. Often drawing inspiration from the French Barbizon School, a movement which emphasized plein air painting and a deep connection to nature, Lathrop displayed an abiding commitment to capturing the natural beauty of his surroundings. This influence can be seen in Lily Pond, Lake George, in which he evokes a sense of tranquility and introspection. His careful attention to the nuances of light and color allows him to create a landscape that emotionally connects with the viewer. In addition to his painting career, Lathrop was a dedicated educator mentoring several members of the New Hope School's first and second generations. The relined canvas in overall good condition, with an upper stretcher bar mark running along the top tier of the canvas. Old craquelure visible at bottom right quadrant across the pond (stretching diagonally). A few more at center right, along the right outer edge (rather minimal, and not obtrusive). Examination under UV light does not reveal any major inpainting except from some localized inpainting at bottom center (single pinpoint dot on a lilypad), bottom center right (inpainted abrasions along the bottom outer edge), and a few dots below the signature at bottom right, which remans entirely intact. See Specialist's pictures for more details. To request additional information or access to more images, please contact Specialist Raphael Chatroux at rchatroux@freemansauction.com.
