λ JOHN LATHAM (BRITISH 1921-2006)UNTITLED (HOOD)Mixed media with books and plaster 18 x 94.5cm (7 x 37 in.)Provenance:A gift from the artist to Joe Tilson in 1960sBorn in 1921 in present day Zambia, John Latham was sent away to school in England from a young age and subsequently volunteered for the Royal Navy during World War II, serving on the King George V. It was from the crow's nest as look-out that he witnessed the battle between the British warships and the infamous German battleship Bismarck in May 1941. During this battle HMS Hood was sunk with the loss of over 1,400 lives. The chaos and destruction which Latham witnessed during the war was to influence his work of the 1950s and 1960s, no more so than in the present lot.In 1958 Latham started to incorporate books into his work. John Walker explains that 'Latham appropriated books - everyday objects - and made them strange by treating them as visual/palpable things rather than as works of literature' (John Walker, John Latham - The incidental person, his art and ideas, Middlesex, 1995, p.35.)Here Latham has incorporated a book of poetry by the 19th Century author Thomas Hood. It was not the contents that interested him but the bold lettering of HOOD on the spine. Delving through the second-hand bookshops of Holland Park this particular tome would have resonated deeply with Latham's memories of the war and the sinking of HMS Hood, giving this work rare personal subject. It would also explain why he personally gifted this particular piece to Joe Tilson in the 1960s.
