After learning photography in the French Air Force in World War II, he worked in Paris and then New York where, from the early 1950s to late 1970s, he became a much sought-after fashion photographer, working for major magazines such as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, McCalls and The Ladies Home Journal. Prigent was a protegé of New York fashion photographer Lillian Bassman and a colleague and devoté of Richard Avedon. Like Avedon, he photographed some the great models of the age including Dovima, Suzy Parker, Lauren Hutton and Maude Adams. He also became noted for his inventive TV Guide covers featuring stars such as Sonny and Cher, Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, Leslie Uggams as well as also creating album covers for Barbra Streisand, Alice Cooper and other notable musicians. Collecting antiques for use as props in his shoots, Prigent opened Malmaison Antiques in Manhattan in 1978 after receiving a diagnosis of macular degeneration signaled the end of his photography career. Prigent called his store Malmaison after the chateau of Napoleons first wife, Josephine. After a run of several years on 10th Street near Broadway, the store was moved to his town house on East 74th Street where three floors were filled with consoles, nesting tables, secretaries, armchairs, sofas, mirrors, marble busts and other pieces a mecca for interior designers and collectors seeking neo-classical furnishings. A Christie's auction in 2002 dispersed most of the stores inventory, and Mr. Prigent, by then blind, downsized to a penthouse apartment. He died in 2012 after a short illness. A first-hand viewing of this material is also strongly recommended.
