GEORGI ALEKSANDROVICH LAPSHIN (1885-1950) The Beginning of Spring in a Russian Village -1919 Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower left verso with named and titled French exhibition label 41.5 x 57.5 inches (105.5cm x 146cm. Overall including frame 50 x 66.5 inches (127 x169cm) Provenance: Jackson's International sale of December 5,1998, as lot 119, illustrated, where acquired by the late Robert & Betty Kelso. Comparison: For a very similar painting see: Auction House Hotel Des Ventes, Monte-Carlo, sale of July 23, 2015, lot #156, where sold for $82,000. Lapshin was born in Moscow. In the early 1900s he studied at the Stroganov school. From 1906 to 1909 he lived in Paris, where he studied under F. Cormon and J. Lermitte. After returning to Moscow, took part in the exhibition of the Group of Independents (1910), and he became the founder and permanent participant of exhibitions of "Free art" (1911 - 1917). From 1918 - 1922 his works were exhibited in Moscow on the 1st and 2nd exhibitions of paintings of the Professional Union of painters (1918), the 2nd State exhibition of paintings (1919), the 47th exhibition (1922) and the 1st Russian art exhibition in Berlin (1922). In 1924 he moved to Paris. Painted impressionistic landscapes, flowers and still lives. Lapshin was also an accomplished singer (tenor) and performed in the Barcelona Opera and the Lithuanian state theatre. He also created scenery for the Paris Music Hall Folies Bergere and the Cabaret til Monte-Carlo. He continued to be exhibited throughout his life including in Paris, Nice, Cannes, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Berlin. He was also a member of Turgenev's artistic Islands.
