Eugene Lanceray was a Russian and Soviet painter, and book artist and associated stylistically with Mir iskusstva, the World of Art, an influential Russian art movement inspired by an artistic journal of the same name, founded in 1899, in Saint Petersburg. Other prominent members of Mir iskusstva included Lancerays uncle Alexandre Benois, Konstantin Somov, Walter Nouvel, Leon Bakst, and Dmitry Filosofov. Est: €9,600 - €12,000

Oil on panel Dagestan/Russia, 1918 Evgeni Evgenievich Lanceray (1875-1946) – Russian painter, graphic artist, sculptor et al., as well as a member of the ‘Mir iskusstva’ group Signed and dated lower right, ‘E. Lanceray mart 1918’ The authenticity of the painting has been confirmed by Ekaterina and Pavel Lanceray Dimensions: 33.5 x 45 cm Partly gilt wooden frame: 42 x 54 cm Lanceray is regarded as one of the leading Russian artists of the early 20th century. The current highest auction record for a landscape painting by Lanceray is circa €27,000 Already between 1912 and 1914, Evgeni Evgenievich Lanceray made a trip to Dagestan to gather material for book illustrations. After the October Revolution, he lived permanently in Temir-Khan-Shura in Dagestan, today’s Buynaksk, and remained there until 1920. The typical expressionist composition shows a view of a piazza in the afore-mentioned village. With the loose brushwork and the skillful lighting, the artist rendered the landscape with an impressive brilliance of colors. Condition: The table has superficial horizontal cracks. The frame shows some losses of paint. The dimensions of the painting are 33.5 x 45 cm, and the wooden frame is 42 x 54 cm in size. Evgeni Evgenievich Lanceray (1875-1946) Born near St. Petersburg into a well-known family of artists, Evgeni Evgenievich Lanceray (or Yevgeny Yevgenyevich Lansere) worked as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, stage designer, mosaic artist and illustrator. He received his first artistic training with his family. From 1892 to 1895, he studied at the local Art School under Y.F. Tsionglinsky, E.K. Lippart and N.A. Gogolinksy. In 1895, he moved to Paris, where he continued his education at the Academy F. Colarossi, the Académie Julian and in the workshops of J.P. Laurens and J.J. Benjamin-Constant. He also attended art history lectures and anatomy lessons at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1898, he returned to Russia. Stylistically, Lanceray is assigned to the ‘Mir iskusstva’ group (World of Art), a revolutionary art movement in Russia in the early 20th century. Today, works of Lanceray are in major museum collections, including the Tretkayov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, as well as the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
