                Est: CHF8,000 - CHF12,000

EVGENY ALEXANDROVICH LANCERAY (1848–1886) “Svyatoslav”, dated 1886, brown patinated bronze. Signed and dated Е. in Cyrillic on the base. Lanserey 1886) and inscribed Отл. К. Берто (cast by K. Berto). H 51 cm. Provenance: - Purchased at the time of its creation by a couple who had emigrated to St. Petersburg, the man working as a secretary for the Tsar's brother. - In family ownership through succession, arrived in Switzerland in 1903 through relocation. - Swiss private collection. Svyatoslav I Igorevich (943-972) was the Grand Duke of Kievan Rus from 945-972. During his decades-long reign, Kievan Rus' expanded into the Volga valley, the Pontic steppe and the Balkans, and the capital was moved from Kiev to Pereyaslavets at the mouth of the Danube. Although his goal of conquering Tsar'grad (Slavic for Constantinople) ultimately failed, Svyatoslav had built Kievan Rus' into the largest state on the European continent by the end of his life. Due to his military triumphs, he was celebrated by Russian and Ukrainian patriots and artists, who first became aware of his legend at the time of the Russo-Turkish War (1768-1774), which ran parallel to Svyatoslav's advance to Constantinople. The bronze group was completed by Lanceray in 1886, making it one of the artist's last works before his death. “Svyatoslav” proved to be immediately popular and was produced in numerous replicas. It is assumed that bronze casts of Svyatoslav were awarded to military leaders or regiments of special merit. The cast on offer bears the foundry signature of K. Berto. After the sculptor's death, many of the models owned by the French foundry Chopin went to K. Berto, who received the patent for the other casts from 1891. ------------------------------------------------- EVGENY ALEXANDROVICH LANCERAY (1848–1886) "Swjatoslaw", datiert 1886. Bronze braun patiniert. Lanserey 1886) sowie bezeichnet Отл. К. Берто (Gegossen K. Berto). H 51 cm.
