    Est: £4,000 - £6,000

WALTER LANGLEY (BRITISH 1852-1922) PLEASANT NEWS signed W LANGLEY lower left watercolour on paper 52 x 39cm; 20 1/2 x 15 1/4in 80.5 x 64cm; 31 3/4 x 25 1/4 Property of a Private Collector Provenance W. Victor Williams (purchased from the artist) W. A. Clark (a gift from the above in 1916) Thence by descent to the present owner Literature Roger Langley, Walter Langley, Pioneer of the Newlyn Art Colony, Bristol, 1997, p.168, illustrated Painted in Newlyn in 1901, the present lot depicts the courtyard of a local cottage; a fisherman pauses from repairing sail cloth to smoke his pipe whilst a young woman reads a letter and two children draw water from a barrel behind. The same courtyard featured in a number of Langley's works including a large oil painting of 1898 A Cousin from Town and a watercolour from 1901 Local Critics. The young woman also appeared in other works by Langley, and can be seen leaning against the harbour railings in the artist's large oil of the same year Between the Tides (Warrington Museum and Art Gallery, Cheshire). The blouse worn in both works was originally white and belonged to a Newlyn woman named Mrs Tregurtha who dyed it pink but gifted it to Langley after she decided it did not suit her complexion.

    Jul. 09, 2024

After Walter Langley,  British 1852-1922-  Never morning wore to evening b

    Est: £200 - £300

After Walter Langley,  British 1852-1922-  Never morning wore to evening but some heart did break;  oil on canvas, signed with initials and dated 'JE H. W. / 1895' (lower left), inscribed 'After W. Langley' verso, 27.9 x 38 cm.  Note:  The present work is a copy after Langley's original, painted in 1894, and which is now held in the collection of the Birmingham Museums Trust [1980P18]. The title of Langley's painting is taken from the 1850 poem 'In Memoriam, A.H.H' by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, referring to the nature of the work as a meditation on grief, depicting a figure who buries her head in her hands, seemingly overwhelmed by loss, whilst being comforted by the woman who sits beside her. The coastal setting, and the fishing vessels in the background, clearly gesture towards the dangers of the sea, which were ever-present in 19th-century fishing communities.

Attributed to Walter Langley,  A cottage in Beer, Devon, with a figure in the doorway

    Est: £800 - £1,200

Attributed to Walter Langley,  British 1852-1922-  A cottage in Beer, Devon, with a figure in the doorway;  oil on panel, 24.4 x 31.3 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  Both the woman's head covering and the foreground water pump suggest a Breton influence, where Langley had spent some time before settling in Cornwall. The building is called Shepherd's Cottage and is a grade II listed building in Beer: https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101306439-shepherds-cottage-beer.  Roger Langley, the artist's grandson, was previously consulted on this picture and advised that there was a strong possibility that the present work is an early oil by Walter Langley, post Brittany and not later than 1881/2.
