Collection Schlégl, Zurich (cf. cat. 1991), (from 1953), Collection Dr. Gerhard Cromme, Essen (1990s to around 2015), since then private collection in the Rhineland Lajos Kassák, an outstanding Hungarian painter, poet and a central figure of the European avant-garde, created with the work offered here an example of the pictorial architecture that he formulated in his manifesto in 1922. Kassák, who came into contact with personalities such as Guillaume Apollinaire, Blaise Cendrars, Robert Delaunay and Pablo Picasso in Paris, developed an art that was strongly influenced by the principles of constructivism and abstraction. The painting "Bildarchitektur" is a fascinating testimony to this revolutionary way of thinking. With clear lines and geometric shapes that redefine the structure of a picture, Kassák shows a vision of art that unites architecture and painting. The reduced, high-contrast colour palette and the precise formal language speak for the clarity and rationality of the Constructivist ideals to which Kassák remained true as one of the leading representatives. Kassák left a lasting influence with his art, not only in Hungary but also internationally, and made a decisive contribution to the development of modern abstract art in Europe. Zusammen mit Lajos Kassák, welchen er bereits 1916 kennenlernte arbeitete zusammen mit ihm an der Zeitschrift MA, in welcher er 1918 auch seine Linolschnitte veröffentlichte. Im Jahre 1919 floh er nach Wien und zog 1922 schließlich nach Weimar. Obwohl er sehr aktiv und interessiert am Bauhaus und an der Theaterwerkstatt von Oskar Schlemmer war und die De Stijl-Kurse von Van Doesburg besuchte, schrieb er sich nie aktiv am Bauhaus ein. Aus dieser Verbindung entstanden jedoch eine Reihe an stark architektonisch geprägter Werke in oft kräftigen Farben und geometrischer Formensprache. In dieser Zeit stellte Bortnyik zudem unter anderem in der Galerie Sturm und der Galerie Nierendorf in Berlin aus. - Nur vereinzelt etw. knickspurig, die Klammerunug etw. rostig, wenige Bll. unscheinbar wasserrandig (Text nicht betroffen). Insgesamt sehr gut erhaltene Exemplare illustriert mit expressiven orig. Linolschnitten. Avant-garde - Bauhaus - Hungary - Two publications of the MA Edition. With 3 orig. linocuts by Sándor Bortnyik and Hans Mattis-Teutsch. Each ill. orig. stapled binding or brochure (somewhat browned, 1 copy minimally stained in the margin). - Contains: as listed above. - Sándor Bortnyik was a Hungarian painter and graphic artist. Together with Lajos Kassák he collaborated on the magazine MA, in which he also published his linocuts in 1918. In 1919 he fled to Vienna and moved to Weimar in 1922. Although he was very active and interested in the Bauhaus and Oskar Schlemmer's theatre workshop and attended Van Doesburg's De Stijl classes, he never actively enrolled at the Bauhaus. However, this connection resulted in a series of strongly architecturally influenced works, often in bold colours and geometric forms. - Only a few occasional creases, staple binding slightly rusty, a few pages with inconspicuous waterstaining in the upper margin (text not affected). Altogether very well-preserved copies with splendid orig. linocut illustrations. This work is subject to under the regular margin scheme. In this work we can appreciate echoes of constructivism applied to geometric abstraction. Instead of geometric rigour we find planes of colour, although clearly delimited, organic and textured through collage, transcending the purely conceptual to invite the viewer to approach and even touch the work. According to the words dedicated by the Guillermo de Osma Gallery in its catalogue, specifically about this work; "Lajos Kassák's collages are among the most interesting of his production. They were developed after his contact, in 1923, with Kurt Schwitters, Hans Arp and Sophie Täuber-Arp and are a good example of his attempt to combine Constructivist "order" with Dada "chaos". The particularity of Kassák, who in addition to being editor of the magazine MA was also a poet, essayist and novelist, lies in the achievement of an unambiguous visual poetry". Hungarian poet, novelist, painter, essayist, editor, avant-garde theorist and occasional translator Kassák was one of the first genuine working-class writers in Hungarian literature. Self-taught, he became a writer within the socialist movement and published journals important to the radical intellectual culture of Budapest in the early 20th century. Although he cannot be fully identified with any avant-garde movement, he adopted elements of Expressionism, Futurism and Dadaism. He has been described as an artistic virtuoso whose great achievements and socially committed activities were intertwined with a constant artistic vitality. He set the pace for the development of the avant-garde in Hungary. Kassák is also considered a pioneer of a number of new developments in the Hungarian modernist and avant-garde art scene. It has been said that Kassák's legacy went unrecognised for a long time because his political and artistic activities were overshadowed by the Iron Curtain government. Kassák's artistic and political involvement began actively in the 1910s, after working as a locksmith. In 1920, due to the Hungarian government's attack on intellectuals such as Lajos Kassák, which intensified after the collapse of the Republic of Councils in Hungary, he fled into exile in Vienna. Paradoxically, this attack on Kassák's intellectual activism led to a flourishing literary lifestyle that included exhibitions, readings, cultural spirit events and magazine publishing ventures that would soon be transported back to Hungary, where an underground trend of social campaigning was being born. After spending six years in exile, Kassák returned to Hungary and devoted himself to literary activities, including the founding of the Munka Circle and the magazine that lasted almost ten years in a row and which also fostered the revival of a collectivised avant-garde art movement that was united by socio-politically oriented artistic practices. His involvement in these political spheres affected his reception and treatment as a writer after the magazines were discontinued following the installation of the communist regime after World War II. For the second time, Kassák was forced to retire to his home in Bekásmegyer. It was not until 1956 that Kassák's reputation as a writer was established, although it can be said that, at that time, there was still no holistic consideration for his intellectual and artistic legacy. Kassák devoted himself mainly to multimodality.

(1887 Érsekújvár/Nové Zámky/Österreich-Ungarn - 1967 Budapest) /T/Konstruktivistische Komposition "MA". Originaltitel// Wohl um 1921-1923 entstandene Arbeit des ungarischen Schriftstellers und Malers. Kassak gab ab 1916 in Budapest (später in Wien) die Avantgardezeitschrift "MA" (Heute) heraus, in der außer ihm selbst u. a. Kurt Schwitters, Oskar Schlemmer, El Lissitzky und Alexander Archipenko publizierten. 1920 emigrierte er nach Wien und schloss sich dem Konstruktivismus an; 1922 gab er in Zusammenarbeit mit László Moholy-Nagy das "Buch neuer Künstler" heraus. Zugleich begann Kassak mit eigenen konstruktivistischen Arbeiten, die er in der Galerie "Der Sturm" in Berlin zeigte und für die gleichnamige Zeitschrift schuf. 1923 erschien im Verlag "Der Sturm" das "MA-Buch" mit Gedichten und Linolschnitten Kassaks - eine der berühmtesten Publikationen des "Sturm" und eine Ikone der experimentellen Typographie.
