          JOSEF LADA 1887 - 1957 - BUILDING A SNOWMAN

          Est: -

From the expert opinion of PhDr. Pavly Pečinková, CSc.: "The presented image has not yet been recorded in the professional literature. The motif of building a snowman has dozens of variations in the work of Josef Lada. It already appears in Humoristic lists, it is used in illustrations of children's books (for example, for the fairy tale Snow White). Since the mid-1930s , when Lada begins to apply himself not only as a caricaturist and illustrator, but also as a painter, is also reflected in his free work. Artistic features are typical of Lada's painting of the 1930s, especially for more freely executed landscape studies, which in their style correspond to the contemporary orientation of the art department Art talks (e.g. Crows fly, 1933, National gallery in Prague, Winter landscape, 1935, Art gallery in Zlín, Czech village, 1935, etc.) The work is made on high-quality branded cardboard, which Lada usually used." Josef Lada created it for the winemaker Karel Novák, who owned a wine bar near the Týn Temple, which was popularly visited by painters and poets, who left a memory of him in the visitor's book. It was no different in the case of Josef Lady. Est: -

From the expert opinion of PhDr. Pavla Pečinková, CSc .: "This specific, modest color combination combining pencil with watercolor and white is strongly represented in Lada's work, especially at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. Lada mentions pencil contours as a way to a more vivid painterly expression in the commemorative book Chronicle of My Life (“I could only look for the possibility of further development by using softer material such as chalk or pencil ”). Until the mid-1930s, Lada basically sought the optimal position of expression between drawing and painting. He doesn't want to give up his linear stylization and basically still draws his paintings. Several studies with motifs from the Czech countryside have been preserved in the estate, which can be assigned to the then program line of Umělecká beseda. However, open-air painting and the traditional academic technique of oil painting did not suit Lada, so he remained with his proven means. His original concept, in which he fully applied his drawing experience, significantly enriched the expressive register of contemporary Czech landscape painting. Lada's original painting, in which he fully applied his experience, significantly enriched the expressive register of contemporary Czech painting and drawing. JOSEF LADA 1887 - 1957 - WINTER

          Est: -

Josef Lada established himself as undoubtedly one of the most important painters of the Czech countryside. Recognized as a typical figuralist in the 1940s, Lada also more often focused on village motifs with almost or no figural staff and sought the optimal position of expression between drawing and painting. Josef Lada sticks to his linear stylization and translates landscape motifs into simple characters, from which he composes a new pictorial reality. Lada's original painting, in which he fully applied his drawing experience, significantly enriched the expressive register of contemporary Czech landscape painting. The artistic conception of the presented work, characterized by particularly fine contours and a more pronounced application of the painter's handwriting, is characteristic of the period of the 1940s, when Lada's painting reached its peak phase. The arrangement of the composition, the drawing stylization, the method of coloring and the type of signature coincide with the documented originals from the given period. Thanks to his uniqueness of the manuscript, Josef Lada became one of the icons of Czech fine art, and the Czech winter in the countryside is often referred to as "Ladovská." The work comes from the restitution of the National Gallery and an expert assessment is written on it by PhDr. Pavla Pečinková, CSc. Published: Olič, J .: Lada, Slovart 2008, p. 499. Exhibited by: NG - Heritage of Folk Art in Czech and Slovak Painting, in the Karlovy Vary Art Gallery, inventory label of the National Gallery K33910. CHRISTMAS

          Est: -

This work from the Christmas series, showing Czech holiday traditions, presents icon of Czech painting and illustration Josef Lada’s typical style of strong lines and rounded figures. Lada’s White Christmas has become a mainstay of the traditional Christmas holiday, and every year Czechs celebrate his work on calendars, Christmas cards and postcards featuring reproductions of Lada’s paintings. From the assessment by PhDr. Pavla Pečinková, CSc.: “This work represents the original used to print the full-page newspaper illustration published in the Christmas issue of Lidové noviny in 1937. This work is the first version of Christmas motifs arranged in this manner, and it contains a number of scenes that Lada expounded on in his work as separate gouaches or developed into Christmas cards. He repeated the same motifs and composition with only partial changes in a colored illustration with the same format and same name (Christmas – New Year’s Day), which was published as a poster in 1938. Lada drew a third version in 1941, again with the same name and partial changes| his fourth version is from 1948 (the illustration was also printed on canvas as a visual aid for national history class in schools). Only the two later versions of the same composition, from 1938 and 1941, are reproduced in Jiří Olič’s monograph Lada (Slovart, 2008). Color reproductions of the drawing presented here have not been recorded. Nor do I have any evidence that the presented work has been represented at an exhibition. The artistic interpretation of this work is remarkable for the second half of the 1930s, when Lada departed from his successful caricature style known from the first book illustrations for The Good Soldier Švejk and he advanced to masterful linear stylization that convincingly captures reality.”

          VILLAGE GREEN WITH CHAPEL

          Est: -

The newly discovered colored drawing Village Green with Chapel, according to the expert assessment by PhDr. Pavla Pečinková, CSc., |“... both in terms of motif and execution are unconditionally from the body of Lada's work. It is from a series of spring motifs that is visited frequently by Lada, especially in the 1940s. At that time Lada, recognized as a distinctive figure artist, focused more frequently on village motifs without figurative staffage, seeking an optimal artistic position between illustration and painting. He becomes known as a painter of the Czech countryside, but he does not want to give up his linear stylization| he transposes his landscape motifs into simple symbols, which he uses to construct a new visual reality. Lada’s original painterly expression, in which he fully applies his experience as an illustrator, significantly enriched the inventory of expression of period Czech landscape painting. The artistic interpretation of this work, particularly characterized by gentle contours and a stronger application of painterly style, is typical for the 1940s period, when Lada’s painted oeuvre reaches its height. The composition, illustration style, method of coloring and type of signature matches documented originals from this period. The work is executed on the high-quality brand paperboard that Lada enjoyed using.” The provenance of the painting is the collection of sculptor Břetislav Benda.
