    Silver power crowning the set, polychrome, stewed and gilded wood. Overall measurements: 54 x 29 x 37 cm. Provenance: important private collection of an important decorator and antique dealer, Madrid. Pedro Laboria (around 1700-1770) was a Spanish sculptor born around 1700 in the Andalusian city of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in the province of Cádiz. He trained in an Andalusian workshop, probably in Seville. In 1738 he settled in Santafé de Bogotá (Viceroyalty of the New Kingdom of Granada) where he worked mainly for the company of Jesus in the lands of the Viceroyalty of New Granada.     Attributed to Pedro Laboria (Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, circa 1700 - Bogotá, Colombia, circa 1770) 'Saint Joseph' Carved and polychrome wooden sculpture. It shows small flaws. Height: 80 cm. Pedro Laboria probably trained in a workshop in Seville, and arrived in South America in 1738, settling in Santa Fe de Bogotá, where he contributed to increasing the influence of Andalusian sculpture in the Viceroyalty of New Granada, becoming one of the principal sculptors of the Colonial period. The sculptor had a strong relationship with the Jesuits. Through the Jesuits of Sanlúcar, he entered into the service of the Jesuits of Bogota. Thanks to the artworks that he made for the Society of Jesus, which at the time renovated the Temple of Saint Ignatius, Laboria became one of the greatest exponents of the sculpture of New Granada. One of his greatest works, for the same temple, is the ecstasy of Saint Ignatius, dated 1749. The depiction of Jesuit saints was a constant in his artistic life. He carved a Saint Francis Borgia, a moribund saint Francis Xavier and two sculptures of Saint Ignatius of Loyola for the Temple of Saint Ignatius. Paintings of the different moments of Sant Francis’ life as Duke of Borgia are kept at the Borgias’ Ducal Palace in Gandia, where he is depicted as a nobleman, in a very similar style to this sculpture.

Article from Pablo Francisco Amador Marrero. "San Antonio". Edited by Coll y Cortés, p.48. Possibly the best spanish sculptor from Colombia in his time. Pedro Laboria was formed in the sevillian workshops. In 1738 he moved to Bogotá with Cristóbal de Vergara, being fired by La Compañía de Jesús. His work is conserved now in so many convents and churchs in the colombian capital, as in the cathedral.
