BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) was a British airline owned by the British government. It was founded in 1939 after the merger of Imperial Airways and British Airways Ltd. During WWII BOAC kept Britain connected with its colonies and the allied world. The airline travelled around the world to many destinations, the first flight to Hong Kong was carried out in 1936.The airline was operative and traveling overseas until 1974, after being merged with BEA (British European Airways) which evolved into today's British Airways. In this whimsical image created by Maurice Laban (1912 - 1970) we see the cartoonish figure of a racoon, indigenous to the USA and Canada. This figure serves to encourage the traveler to use BOAC to reach either of these destinations on their route. This is one of a series of posters created in the 1950's to support BOAC's marketing efforts post World War II. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Original Qantas BOAC Poster Australia New Zealand by Maurice Laban c1960

        Est: $1,500 - $2,000

This BOAC / Qantas Airlines poster by artist Maurice Laban which advertises travel to Australia and New Zealand features great potency of color and popular Australian landmarks. The focal point of the poster shows a Kangaroo and Koala placed against one another and in the distant right is the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a staple of Australian architecture. British freelance illustrator Maurice Laban (1912-1970) created posters during the 1940’s to the 1960’s. Laban is well known for his work on BOAC / Qantas posters, where his illustrations focus on representing the notable sites of each of the countries he was commissioned to illustrate for; whether it be costume, buildings or other national hallmarks. Laban’s work is easily identifiable through his use of incredible color intensity made by a utilization of fluorescent opaque inks. Qantas Airways (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services) is the most popular airline in Australia, nicknamed The Flying Kangaroo. Founded in 1920, it is the third oldest airline in the world after KLM and Avianca. In 1935 Qantas operated its first overseas passenger flight from Brisbane to Singapore, a four-day trip. Today, Qantas flies to 20 domestic destinations and 21 international destinations in 14 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.
