KEES VAN DER LAAN (1903-1983) VEILIG VLUG VOORDEELIG VERWARMD. Circa 1935. 39½x24½ inches, 101¼x62¼ cm. Condition A-: minor restoration at edges; minor creases in image and along unobtrusive horizontal fold. Van der Laan spent three formative years in Paris, 1924-1927, a time when French Art Deco was flourishing. His Art Deco sensibilities were further reinforced when, back in Holland, he encountered Cassandre's work for Dutch clients. Van der Laan's posters reflect his versatility with the airbrush and an affinity for transportation in the Machine Age. "Van der Laan created this design for winter railway service after he published his more famous images for the National Luchtvaartschool, and this work shows a more mature and ambitious take on composition and line. Cutting through the night, the train wages war against the fury of a storm. . . Yet while trees bend in the winds and rain relentlessly streaks through the sky, the engine forges on, the lone figure of its steadfast conductor shown in silhouette against the glow of burning coals. Here, the school’s three Dutch branches—in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Enschede—advertise a reduced introductory fee below the thrilling image of a high-wing monoplane flying toward the viewer’s face, so close that it might buzz off the top of the text with its propeller. The soft gray-white spray of wispy clouds around the plane instantly creates an atmosphere of excitement and drama: there is no definition to either the horizon or the ground, no bearings or landmarks... The mundane and difficult aspects of practice, preparation, and study are obviously not touched upon—just the glory of potentially being the next Roland Garros, the famous French aviator from World War I” (Crouse/Deco, p. 31). Condition A-: slight restoration in upper image; minor creases in image. Van der Laan spent three formative years in Paris, 1924-1927, a time when French Art Deco was flourishing. His Art Deco sensibilities were further reinforced when, back in Holland, he encountered Cassandre's work for Dutch clients. Van der Laan's posters reflect his versatility with the airbrush and an affinity for transportation in the Machine Age. This poster was issued upon the opening of the Ypenburg Airport in 1936. The airfield is delineated by the enormous shadow of an aircraft flying overhead. The poster also depicts the Functionalist style terminal, designed by Brinkman & Van der Vlugt who, among other projects, also designed the Van Nelle factory. The terminal had a restaurant, a roof terrace and a grandstand from which visitors could watch the activities of the NSL (the National Aviation School). Rare.

Kleiboer’s Organisatie, Coolsingel 75-79. Tel. 24820 – Rotterdam. Offsetdruk Kühn & Zn, R’dam.” This poster commemorates the first landing of a zeppelin in the Netherlands. LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin (Deutsches Luftschiff Zeppelin; Registration: D-LZ 127) was a German-built and operated, passenger-carrying, hydrogen-filled rigid airship which operated commercially from 1928 to 1937. It entered commercial service in 1928 and became the first commercial passenger transatlantic flight service in the world. It was named after German airship pioneer Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who was a count (Graf) in the German nobility. The airship made 590 flights covering more than 1.7 million kilometers (over 1 million miles). It was designed to be operated by a crew of 36 officers and men. The LZ 127 was the longest rigid airship at the time of its completion and was only surpassed by the USS Akron in 1931. It was scrapped for fighter plane parts in 1940.

KEES VAN DER LAAN (1903-1983) LONDEN. 1938. 39 7/8x24 3/8 inches. Condition A-: trimmed to the image; creases in left margin. Van der Laan spent three formative years in Paris, 1924-27, when French Art Deco was blossoming. When he returned to Holland his Art Deco sensibilities were further reinforced upon encountering A. M. Cassandre''s work for Dutch clients. While all of his posters reflect an affinity for transportation in the Machine Age, this 1938 poster, Londen, is one of the best tributes ever paid to Cassandre. It combines recognizable images from some of Cassandre''s most famous posters (the funnels from the Statendam and the locomotive from Naar Londen). While the influence is clear, Van der Laan showcases his own brilliant talent in the coloring and the execution of the image. This extremely rare poster is one of the most desirable Art Deco transportation images. Van Dam p. 53.
