  • ANTONÍN KYBAL 1901 - 1971 - AUTUMN
    Jun. 06, 2024

    ANTONÍN KYBAL 1901 - 1971 - AUTUMN

    Est: -

Antonín Kybal's path to his unique artistic expression was rather thorny. The son of a merchant and former co-owner of a textile manufactory was expected to continue the family tradition. However, Antonín Kybal secretly enrolled at UMPRUM, where he excelled in Josef Mařatka's sculpture studio. The exploration of painting did not take long either. Through painting, Antonín Kybal explored colour relationships, optics, and the expressive effectiveness of pictorial surfaces, and then applied this knowledge to the textile work for which he became famous. He did not have much confidence in painting as such and, with a few exceptions, never exhibited his works. The work Autumn comes from the artist's family and finds a visual affinity in the solutions of the realized works Summer (a modern realization based on a design from 1964) and Autumn (a curtain for the Czechoslovak Cultural Centre in Cairo, 1959). Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: unsigned

    Dec. 07, 2023

    ANTONÍN KYBAL 1901 - 1971 - LARGE ZEBRA CARPET

    Est: -

A custom-tied carpet according to the design and from the workshop of Antonín Kybal with the motif of zebra stripes and targets was made for JUDr. Jiří Kallmünzer. A Prague lawyer had a carpet made to order for his apartment in a building on Chotkova Street. We also have documented family photographs from this time. Antonín Kybal also used the graphic pattern to print textiles around 1936. According to an expert opinion, the carpet is in excellent condition and comes from the 1930s of Kybal's work, which is his absolute creative peak. Three years later, due to the political situation, Antonín Kybal closes all his workshops and only operates a studio in the house, also in Chotkova Street. The authenticity is confirmed by the heir PhDr Lucia Vlčková, an expert report has been drawn up for the work by academic painter Ludmila Kaprasová. Technique: wool on woolen warp

    ANTONÍN KYBAL 1901 - 1971 - STUDY OF NUDES

    Est: -

The presented Study of an act comes from Antonín Kybal's early painting work, when his handwriting and modernist attitude were gradually refined. The environment in which this work was born was influenced by the Bauhaus and the texts of Josef Čapek. It blurred the distinctions between small and large art and opened an artistic field where artistic authenticity flowed without the intentions of national aspects. Antonín Kybal found a concept in painting that he brought to textile techniques - printing from wooden matrices, tapestry and weaving textiles. Textiles as a medium eventually passed from his native environment and almost from his blood into artistic creation and completely dominated it. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: unsigned

    ANTONÍN KYBAL 1901 - 1971 - VOLUMES

    Est: -

Antonín Kybal's work stands out for its effort to explore, experiment and subdue the technical possibilities of materials. In the case of painting, it is mainly his sense of color and contrast. The 1968 work not coincidentally places glowing foci between static, statue-like colossi that strictly delineate and limit the space of life force. Maybe until they pretty much suffocate it. Antonín Kybal was our most prominent figure in home textile design and an innovator of textile creation in the 20th century. Kybal's main contribution was the ability to enforce high aesthetic, craftsmanship and material demands in industrial production and to blend them with current aesthetic trends. The painting was created as a direct response to the events of August 1968 in Czechoslovakia. Original author's metal frame. The work comes from the artist's estate. Technique: Oil on cardboard, Signed: Unsigned

    ANTONÍN KYBAL 1901 - 1971 - FEBRUARY

    Est: -

An early and unusual landscape theme depicts a rainy February in an urban landscape. Longer, softer brush strokes predominate, and the composition is suitably complemented by figural staff. Antonín Kybal was our most prominent figure in home textile design and an innovator of textile creation in the 20th century. With his work and later his pedagogical work, he elevated textile work from the sphere of conservative and declining traditional craftsmanship into a completely distinctive artistic means of expression, corresponding to the language of modernism. Kybal's main contribution was the ability to enforce high aesthetic, craft and material demands in industrial production and blend them with current aesthetic trends. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower left "Ant. Kybal"
