Otto Kurth was born in Munich, Germany in 1883. He came to America in 1905 and worked in the Art Department of the New York Times during WWI until 1924. As the Assistant Art Director for Liberty Magazine for 26 years, he also worked as a photo engraver.

Kurth and his companion Helen Kroeger began spending summers on the North Fork in the 1930's where they opened their "Anchorage Studio" on Marlene Drive in Mattituck. A close friend and painting companion of Caroline Bell, Kurth was an important member of the Peconic Bay Impressionists.

In 1960, Helen Kroeger and her husband Otto Kurth moved to Mattituck, Long Island permanently.
