Frantisek Kupka Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, b. 1871 - d. 1957

František Kupka (23 September 1871 – 24 June 1957), also known as Frank Kupka or François Kupka,[1] was a Czech painter and graphic artist. He was a pioneer and co-founder of the early phases of the abstract art movement and Orphic Cubism (Orphism).[2] Kupka's abstract works arose from a base of realism, but later evolved into pure abstract art.

Kupka worked as an illustrator of books and posters and, during his early years in Paris, became known for his satirical drawings for newspapers and magazines. In 1906, he settled in Puteaux, a suburb of Paris, and that same year exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne. Kupka was deeply impressed by the first Futurist Manifesto, published in 1909 in Le Figaro. Kupka's 1909 painting Piano Keyboard/Lake marked a break in his representational style. His work became increasingly abstract around 1910–11, reflecting his theories of motion, color, and the relationship between music and painting (orphism). In 1911, he attended meetings of the Puteaux Group (Section d'Or). In 1912, he exhibited his Amorpha. Fugue à deux couleurs, at the Salon des Indépendants in the Cubist room, although he did not wish to be identified with any movement. Creation in the Plastic Arts, a book Kupka completed in 1913, was published in Prague in 1923.

In 1931, he was a founding member of Abstraction-Création. In 1936, his work was included in the exhibition Cubism and Abstract Art at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and in an important show with another Czech painter, Alphonse Mucha, at the Jeu de Paume in Paris. A retrospective of his work took place at the Galerie Mánes in Prague in 1946. The same year, Kupka participated in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, where he continued to exhibit regularly until his death. During the early 1950s, he gained general recognition and had several solo shows in New York.

Between 1919 and 1938 Kupka was financially supported by his good friend, art collector and industrialist Jindrich Waldes who accumulated a substantial collection of his art. Kupka died in 1957 in Puteaux, France.

KUPKA FRANTISEK: (1871-1957) Czech painter and graphic artist. An illustrated A.L.S., Kupka, one page, 4to, n.p., 25th October 1950, to [Blaise] Cendrars, in French. Written in his distinctive hand, Kupka sends an invitation to the novelist and poet Cendrars, ´Nous serions si heureux si nous pouvions t´avoir un peu avec nous. Sois charitable, fixe un jour et viens, nous t´en prions!´ (Translation: ´We'd be so happy if we could have you with us for a while. But we've just had a row because I say that if you're asked to come for lunch or dinner, you probably won't come. And yet in your little note you promise to come; but if you are too busy you will forget. Be charitable, set a date and come, we beg you!´). To the lower left quarter of the page Kupka has drawn a pencil street plan, with various ink annotations, which provide instructions for reaching his house at rue Lemaitre, Puteaux, from the Pont de Neuilly. A letter of good association. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Blaise Cendrars (1887-1961) Swiss-born French novelist and poet, a writer of considerable influence in the European modernist movement. Kupka served as a volunteer in World War I (occasionally accompanied by his wife at the front lines) and is mentioned in La Main coupee, Cendrars´ book describing his own war experiences. Cendrars refers to Kupka as a ´proud soldier, calm, placid, strong´.

FRANTIŠEK KUPKA 1871 - 1957 - STUDY OF A MAN RESTING IN THE SUN

    Est: -

From the opinion of Rea Michalová PhD: "In the present work, which probably originated as an occasional chamber study in the early years of the twentieth century, in the context of other more "straightforward" figurative depictions, Kupka set up a mirror to the surrounding world with undisguised openness. In my opinion, the creation of the present work should be put in the context of the figurative type of the introverted young man, which contrasts sharply with Kupka's conception of female figures, who are above all the type of the "frilly", enchanting femme fatale. The genesis of this male figure type can be found in the famous painting Biblioman (1896-1897). Although it visually captures the likeness of the painter's friend and poet Hanus Jelinek, it is Kupka's crypto-portrait. The study of a man resting in the sun, convincingly painterly in the sense of colour and reckoning with the play of the sun's rays on the model's body, demonstrates the artist's conviction that it is necessary to "relearn from nature", despite the knowledge that he himself will remain a dreamer." Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: oil, cardboard, Signed: sign. upper right: Kupka

In the same year, at the age of eighty, Frantisek Kupka concluded his first representation contract with the prominent Parisian and New York gallerist Louis Carré (1897–1977). Kupka was introduced to Carré by painter Jacques Villon, a neighbour of his from Puteaux. At that time, Louis Carré represented internationally known artists such as Pablo Picasso, Jacques Villon, Alexander Calder, Fernand Léger, André Lanskoy, etc. According to Carré’s grandson, his grandfather bought at that time several dozen paintings from Kupka, which he later sold to internationally prominent galleries and museums, e.g. Museum of Modern Art in New York, Solomon R.
