    Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Liu Kuo-Sung China, Taiwan, Province of China, (b.1932) abstract landscape watercolor and ink on paper From the private collection of Bret Waller and Mary Lou Dooley Waller, Indianapolis, Indiana. The piece was gifted by The Asian Arts Society at Indianapolis Museum of Art during Mr. Waller's tenure as Museum Director, 1990-2001. Biography from Bonhams Bond Street: Liu Kuo-sung (also Liu Guosong) is sometimes known as the 'Father of Modern Chinese Ink Painting'. He is recognized as one of the earliest and most important advocates and practitioners of modernist Chinese art. Liu moved to Taiwan in 1949, and in 1956, he graduated from the Fine Arts Department of the National Taiwan Normal University, where he studied both traditional brush-and-ink and Western-style painting techniques. As one of the co-founders of Taiwan's Fifth Moon Painting Society (Wuyue huahui ????) in 1957, Liu Kuo-sung sought a new approach to art, which was inspired by both traditional Chinese painting especially the style of the late Tang period (618-907) and the monumental landscape painting style of the 10th to 11th centuries - as well as modern styles and techniques, such as abstract expressionism. Before turning to ink painting in 1961, Liu experimented with abstract oils. By the mid-1960s, Liu had gradually developed his own personal pictorial formulae, in which he combines ink painting with collage and applies ink and colour on special paper. His works have been collected by almost seventy prestigious museums and galleries, including the Palace Museum in Beijing, the British Museum in London and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco; the Chicago Art Institute; Cleveland Museum of Art, The Nelson Gallery of Art and Catkins Museum; Hong Kong Museum of Art; The City Art Gallery, Bristol; and the National Gallery of Art and Museum of History, Taipei. Est: $35,000 - $45,000

LIU KUO-SUNG [GUOSONG] (CHINESE B. 1932) Mountains and Water, 1964 ink and color on paper 85 x 55 cm (33 1/2 x 21 5/8 in.) framed dimensions: 103 x 66.5 cm (40 1/2 x 26 1/8 in.) signed and dated lower left PROVENANCE Gifted by the artist to the parents of the current owner, ca. 1966 in Iowa City thence by descent LOT NOTES Initially considered as a political subversive due to the westward leaning language of his work, Liu Guosong [Kuo-Sung] has since come to be seen as a major contributor to the development of 20th century Chinese art and even as the "father of modern Chinese painting". Stressing the importance of experimentation, Guosong`s work embodies the fusion of eastern and western traditions, at once recalling Tang Dynasty landscapes and the work of Abstract Expressionists. As the artist famously put it:  To imitate the new cannot substitute for imitating the old; and to copy the West cannot substitute copying the Chinese. Guosong`s paintings have an undeniable presence that is in no small degree due to the materiality of their surface. During the 1960s the artist developed a style utilizing bold gestural brushwork and eventually embraced surface manipulations -- applying collaged elements as well as removing fibers directly from the surface to mimic brush lines and create a delicate sculptural quality. This approach lends itself to the otherworldly, diaphanously textured landscapes that have made Guosong famous -- often featuring rocky terrain and orbs representing the moon, Earth and sun, in part inspired by the photographs taken during the 1968 Apollo Space Mission.

劉國松 Liu Kuo-Sung (b.1932) 水墨 A CHINESE PAINTING

    Est: NT$1,500,000 - NT$3,000,000

Lee Chun-yi, ed.: "Selected Essays on Liu Kuo-sung", Taipei, National Museum of History, 1996, p. 233, fig. 11. This work will be included in the forthcoming Liu Kuo-sung Catalogue Raisonne (Information provided by The Liu Kuo-sung Foundation) Liu Guosong (Liu Kuo-Sung), born 1932, also known as the founder of the "Fifth Moon Group", came to prominence in Taiwan in the 1950s. In 1968, he was inspired by astronaut William Anders' photograph Earthrise, taken on the Apollo 8 Mission and hence began to develop his "Space Series". He starts to depict the sun and the moon shining above the earth with broad, abstract brushstrokes representing the landmasses and oceans of the earth, clearly showing his influence from Western painting concepts. Never the less, his minimalist compositions still express a poetic sentiment, rooted in his Eastern origin. In 2016, he was the first Chines painter to be elected honorary member of the American Academy of Arts & Science and is acclaimed "the Father of Contemporary Ink Painting". His works are widely collected by Museums worldwide, including the Palace Museum, Beijing, the British Museum, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the National Gallery in Singapore etc.
