    CORNELIS CORNELISZ?

    Est: €26,000 - €35,000

Oil on panel (two joined parts) Netherlands, 1st half of the 16th century Attributed to Cornelis Cornelisz. Buys II (ca. 1495/1500-1545) - Dutch portrait and history painter The painting is entered at the database of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie RKDImages under number 25876 This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by Dr. Max Jakob Friedländer, Berlin, dated 30.09.1932, who attributes the painting to Cornelis Cornelisz. Buys Dimensions: 23.5 x 21 cm Gilt wooden frame (19th century): 35.5 x 32.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Gallery Dr. Benedict & Co., Berlin, acquired circa 1932/33; Collection Barbara S. Schlenker acquired around 1933/34; Private collection in Michigan, U.S.; Private collection, Stockholm, Sweden The present painting, attributed to Cornelis Cornelisz. Buys II, features a typical Renaissance portrait of a woman with braided hair tied up around the head, as it was worn for example by young unmarried women in Italy about the late Quattrocento and early Cinquecento. Similar hairstyles can be seen in paintings of Jan van Scorel as well, a pupil of Cornelis Buys I and teacher of Cornelis Buys II, who traveled through Europe from 1517 to 1524, including Italy. In addition, paintings with compositional and motivic similarity can be found in the works of Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, the uncle of Cornelis Buys II, in whose studio the latter is supposed to have had is artistic training. Condition: The painting is in good condition, showing several areas of retouching (partly slightly discolored) affecting the face, the neck and the chest. The margins show some areas of abrasion due to the frame. The decorative 19th century frame from the collection Schlenker, Michigan/U.S., shows small losses. The size of the painting is 23.5 x 21 cm. The frame measures 35.5 x 32.5 cm. Cornelis Cornelisz. Buys II (c. 1495/1500-1545) Cornelis Cornelisz. Buys II from Alkmaar was active around 1521-1545. He was the son of Cornelis Buys I (c. 1465/70-1524/32) and probably a pupil of his father and of Jan van Scorel (1496-1562), as well as his uncle Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen (before 1470-1533). Buys II is supposed to have been trained from 1512 to 1518 at the studio of his uncle. (cko) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
