    Est: -

around 1920 | technique: oil on canvas | 22 x 33 cm | signature: bottom left | framed Lot description Ohon Coubine was a Czech-French painter and graphic artist. His work was influenced by Cubism, Fauvism and Expressionism, but he gradually turned to lyrical landscape painting and still life, where he emphasized color harmony and simplicity of composition. This painting, a still life with fruit and a porcelain bowl, is a typical example of Coubin's interest in a calm, meditative atmosphere, which he achieves through a careful play of light and shadow. The color palette is moderate, with an emphasis on muted shades, which creates an impression of quiet elegance. Coubine's still lifes are valued for their delicate stylization and poetic expression.

    OTAKAR KUBÍN 1883 - 1969 - STILL LIFE WITH A BOUQUET

    Est: -

The still life with a bouquet is a masterful example of Coubin's supreme (neo) classicism from the best and most attractive period for collectors between the two world wars, when the author achieved an international reputation. It comes from the collection of a renowned art dealer - Adolphe Basler. It combines a crystal clear, meticulously cultivated art form with an idea of the calm, quiet beauty of the home nook, resulting from the inner harmony of the individual components of the painting. Intellect and delicate artistic sensibility equally contribute to the extraordinary charm of this work. Just as the writer and poet Francis Carco wrote about the author's painting: “This (…) orderly, well-thought-out painting does not allow us to escape it. He controls the spirit as well as the senses. ”In his work, Coubine has always followed the principle that the artist's mission is not to seek out unusual impressions, but to patiently study reality and nature. Coubine is not surprised by the selection of objects, but by their arrangement and painting. Everything here is balanced into a simple and at the same time extremely noble effect, with brilliant sensitivity and sophistication of the painting means. His work fully resonates with its classicism, which made him famous - his unique sense of harmonious vision of things, peace and rhythmic balance comes into play. Othon Coubine (Czech, 1883-1969) Bouquet of lilacs in a vase, 1929 Oil on canvas

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Othon Coubine (Czech, 1883-1969) Bouquet of lilacs in a vase, 1929 Oil on canvas 25-3/4 x 21-1/2 inches (65.4 x 54.6 cm) Signed lower right: Coubine PROVENANCE: Galerie Théophile Bríant, Paris; Private collection, Switzerland; Max Müller, Switzerland, acquired from the above, 1930s; Thence by descent to the present owner, 1973. We are grateful to Dr. Rea Michalová, art historian/curator and specialist on the art of Othon Coubine, for his enthusiastic endorsement of the present work and for preparing this thoughtful catalogue essay. Bouquet of lilacs in a vase is an outstanding example of the floral still lifes painted during the 1920s by Otakar Kubín (known in France as Othon Coubine), the most famous and consistent representative of Czech neoclassicism, an art movement known in France as the " retour à l'ordre". The painter's distinctive, lyrical conception of the motif is characterized by a shimmering sense of atmosphere and near-color harmonies that impart a strong emotional vibration to his work. Coubine's attachment to the neo-realist current reflected his personal sensibilities, his response to the post-war atmosphere, and his particular inspiration from the work of French artists Ingres and Corot—all of which combined to earn him considerable fame in France, where he lived permanently from 1912. The abundance of articles and publications written about his work by French and German art historians and critics not long after his arrival in France was a testament to his rapidly growing reputation. The first monograph on Coubine was published in 1922 by the editors of the Italian magazine "Valori plastici" (Plastic Values), which grouped him together with such luminaries as Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, Arturo Martini, and Gino Severini. Written by Maurice Raynal, a French theorist associated with a group of artists around Galerie de l'Effort Moderne's Léonce Rosenberg, one of the most influential art dealers of the twentieth century, the monograph laid out the philosophy of this group which sought to create a modern, new classicism. Coubine was thus situated directly in the center of this new European movement. The declaration of war [in 1914] dealt a dramatic blow to the artist. He was sent to an internment camp in Bordeaux and, after his release, material misery deprived him of the opportunity to paint in oil. He thus devoted himself during this period to the study of theoretical and philosophical writings at the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. In Blaise Pascal's treatise L'Esprit du géometrie ("Spirit of Geometry"), he discovered a justification for his new artistic inclinations. He frequented the Louvre, where he admired the Italian masters of the Quattrocento. It is in his drawings that his transition to classicism is reflected for the first time. The present painting, Bouquet of lilacs in a vase, shows Coubine, in a quest for ideal beauty, "adjusting" nature into configurations that do not naturally occur in it. On a wooden chest of drawers, he placed a simple, undecorated gray-white vase crowned with an expansive arrangement of a beautiful single-species bouquet of lilacs, plants of the olive family, which growing naturally both in France and abundantly in the Czech Republic. Their powerful perfume would doubtless have had an intensely sensory-emotional significance for the artist. Coubine was repeatedly inspired by the enchanting lilacs. For example, the National Gallery, Prague owns Coubine's Bouquet in a vase of 1924, in which the lilacs form a part of a multi-species bouquet; the Moravian Gallery in Brno owns a Bouquet of lilacs which is supplemented by a marigold, the bridal veil and iris. Against a neutral, silvery-gray background (a color tone inspired by the work of Corot), Coubine centrally placed a charming sy

  • Otakar Kubin (Othon Coubine), In Gedanken, 1914
    Jun. 17, 2021

Otakar Kubin (Othon Coubine), In Gedanken, 1914

    Est: €80,000 - €120,000

Signed 'O. Kubin' in black lower left. Verso with printed gallery label "Der Sturm / Zeitschrift / Herausgeber Herwarth Walden", thereon with typewritten inscription "Otakar Kubin/ Paris/ In Gedanken". The painting underwent art technological examination at CICS (Cologne Institute of Conservation Sciences), Technische Hochschule, Cologne. An examination report dated 3 May 2021 is available. In 1912 Herwarth Walden opened his legendary Berlin gallery, Der Sturm, where he presented an international line-up of key avant-garde artists, among whom there were also several Czech painters and sculptors. These included Emil Filla, Otto Gutfreund and Vincenc Beneš, whose works were presented multiple times at the gallery's group exhibitions. However, the only Czech artist for whom Walden organised a solo exhibition was Otakar Kubin. It was shown in April and May of 1914, as the gallery's 25th exhibition, and presented 30 of his recent paintings. Under the number 21, the exhibition catalogue also lists - without illustrating - the work offered here: “In Gedanken”. Otakar Kubin was educated in Czechia and was initially influenced by French post-impressionism. The artist travelled through Belgium, France and Italy from 1904 and settled in Paris in 1912. During a short period consisting solely of the years 1913 and 1914, Otakar Kubin combined Cubist and Expressionist stylistic devices into a very reductive, unmistakable form of expression. His motifs, mostly images of figures and still lifes, possess a mystical air in their archaic simplicity. They are depicted in angular, crystalline forms; in terms of colour, blue and yellow dominate. “It points to the unusual distinctiveness of Kubin's construction of the new people of new worlds, something like pagan prophets of the new age of humanity. They have strange stiff pantomimic gestures and from their truncated, angular and cubic forms there radiates a magical light, a kind of aura, which emphasizes the spiritual disposition of the paintings,” is Vojtech Lahoda's apt description of these extraordinary works (in: Der Sturm - Zentrum der Avantgarde, exhib. cat. Von der Heydt-Museum Wuppertal 2012, vol. II, p. 511). In the 1920s Kubin found his way to his later neoclassical, lyrical style. The painting offered at this auction is a rare example of the important Cubist phase in Kubin's work, with which he set pioneering accents within the circle of Der Sturm.
