    CORNELIS KRUSEMAN

    Est: €2,500 - €3,500

Cornelis Kruseman (1797-1857) Portrait of a young woman wearing a blue-gray dress and a red scarf (c. 1825-1830) Signed upper left Oil on canvas, 63.3 x 54.1 cm Provenance: - Venduhuis der Notarissen, The Hague, 21 November 1978, lot 42 - Collection Kouw - Auction Van Marle & Bignell, The Hague, 10-12 September 1979, lot 278 - Auction Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 9 September 1997, lot 70 - Auction Rennes Encheres, Rennes, 27 January 2014, lot 148 Note: Registered at the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History in The Hague under number 143749. Cornelis Kruseman was born in 1797, in Amsterdam, as the son of a pharmacist. In October 1811, he commenced his studies at the Amsterdamse Tekenacademie, earning various medals early on for his artistic achievements. Kruseman's oeuvre encompasses various genres, including historical pieces, depictions of Italian scenes, and portraits. In 1821, Kruseman left Amsterdam for Rome, where his frequent travels back and forth earned him the name "the Italian Kruseman". During the Romantic era, picturesque Italy often beckoned artists, and there he focused on portraying rural populations. A striking example of this is the painting 'Een van zin', exhibited at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam during the ‘Masters of Romanticism’ exhibition in 2005 and 2006. It currently graces the walls of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Following his time in Italy, he resettled in The Hague. The subjects of his portraits were members of the royal family, other members of nobility or upper bourgeoisie, with many of these portraits still adorning places associated with the subjects' original dwellings, such as Duivenvoorde Castle (featuring portraits of W.A. Baron Schimmelpenninck van der Oye and his wife). * Please note: condition reports and additional photos are available upon request. Cornelis Kruseman, Girl with an Orange

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Signed lower left: C. Kruseman Cornelis Kruseman was occasionally referred to as "the Raphael of the North", which is understandable in the case of this painting, as it appears to be inspired by Raphael's portrait of Bindo Altovito. Kruseman travelled to Switzerland in 1821 and then came to Paris, where he visited the studios of Jacques-Louis David, Horace Vernet and Antoine-Jean Isabey, among others. Back in the Netherlands he settled in The Hague in 1825. He spent the years 1841 to 1847 in Italy. He returned to The Hague from 1847 to 1845, and afterwards moved to Lisse, where he remained until his death. His pupils included Herman Frederik Carel ten Kate and Raden Saleh.
