Harold Krisel, American,1920-1995,"Summer-4", serigraph, pencil signed, dated, titled, numbered (JDUN2125){MM} Property Title / Biography: Litchfield County Auctions is pleased to offer highlights from the modern art collection of the famed interior designer and artist Jack Dunbar. As a student at the Cleveland School of art, Dunbar had a sense that his career would be entwined in the arts, specifically design and architecture. Reflective of his gifted talents, he was awarded a 1946 Taliesin Fellowship study with the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture in Wisconsin. Dunbar was heavily influenced by the work of Hungarian modernist artist László Moholy-Nagy, founder of Chicagos Institute of Art and Design, as well as his own personal travels throughout Europe visiting many architectural landmarks. Upon his return, he landed his first job in New York as assistant to the architectural photographer Ezra Stoller. He later worked at Harpers Bazaar with Alexy Bradovich, Carmel Snow, and Diana Vreeland. Dunbar also designed book jackets and posters for the Museum of Modern Art which led to showroom design for Herman Miller. In 1956, he joined Skidmore Owings and Merrill for which he designed many corporate headquarters worldwide. Dunbar was also responsible for assembling major modern art collections. In 1977, Dunbar launched his own design firm with partner Lydia dePolo. In 1987 he was inducted into the prestigious Interior Designers of America Hall of Fame, today he focuses on his own artwork in his Connecticut studio. Pair of Harold Krisel Serigraphs, Signed Limited Edition

Works are titled “Ripple Form Y|R” and "Ripple Form R|B". Krisel began his studies as a teenager on scholarship at the American Artist School in NYC where he met Piet Mondrian, a major influence in Krisel’s work. Returning from service in WWII, he joined the American Abstract Artists, continuing his fine art while studying architecture at the New Bauhaus in Chicago with graduate studies at I.I.T. After a successful career at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (and cover features of him in the February 1955 Interiors and the April 1964 Architectural Forum), he began teaching at the High School of Art & Design in NYC which allowed him the time to pursue his art while still supporting a family. Moving to Bridgehampton to expand his studio, he showed at the Elaine Benson Gallery and befriended such artists as Perle Fine and Ibram Lassaw. His works are in important private and museum collections worldwide, including MoMA (3 works from the collection represented online), The Metropolitan Museum, The British Museum, The Whitney, The Guggenheim, and many others.
