    WILHELM KRAY (1828 Berlin - 1889 München)

    Est: €800 - €1,200

  • WILHELM KRAY ( Berlin, Germany1828-1889). "The singing of the Sirens". Oil canvas. It has a period frame. Signed in the lower right corner.
    Sep. 14, 2023

WILHELM KRAY ( Berlin, Germany1828-1889). "The singing of the Sirens". Oil canvas. It has a period frame. Signed in the lower right corner.

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

WILHELM KRAY ( Berlin, Germany 1828-1889). "The Song of the Sirens". Oil on canvas. It has a period frame. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 75 x 111 cm; 122 x 159 cm (frame). Wilhelm Kray worked on several occasions this theme in which several naked women swirl around a man. Conceived as mermaids, the young women do not show fish tails, which shows how the artist advocates the eroticism of the concept. For this reason, the work falls within the Symbolist movement which, taking literature as its starting point, defined a fully metaphorical art that sought to evoke hidden meanings through elaborate rhetoric. The Symbolists believed that art should aim to capture the most absolute truths, which could only be captured by indirect and ambiguous methods, hence the constant reference to symbol and metaphor. In the case of this canvas, the absolute centre of the representation is its poetic content. Wilhelm Kray was a goldsmith before 1848. From 1848 he studied at the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin with Julius Schrader, Wilhelm Schirmer and Hermann Stilke. Between 1856 and 1872 he took part in the exhibitions of the Berlin Academy. In 1859/60 he was in Paris and trained in the studio of Alexandre Cabanel and Paul Baudry. He then returned to Berlin, where he worked mainly as a portraitist. Between 1867 and 1871 Kray worked in an art studio in Rome, from where he made numerous trips to Naples and Venice. Returning to Prussia around 1872, he became a member of the Deutscher Künstlerverein. From 1878 he lived in Vienna and from 1879 to 1888 he took part in the international art exhibitions at the Crystal Palace in Munich. Wilhelm Kray's style is characteristic of German salon and exhibition painting of the mid to late 19th century and focuses on romantic themes of history, mythology and allegory. His most important works include Psyche with Butterfly on the Lake Shore, Allegory of Winter, Southerner as an Allegory of Music, The Mermaid, The Boatman and the Mermaids and The Myth of the Loreley, which were widely copied and reproduced during his lifetime, with Psyche reproduced on the serving plates of the Royal Vienna China Company around 1889. Kray's public paintings still adorn the walls of the Cologne Museum and the Gratz Museum.

    Sleeping Fisherman with Mermaids

    Est: €8,000 - €10,000

KRAY, WILHELM 1828 Berlin - 1889 Munich Title: Sleeping Fisherman with Mermaids. Technique: Oil on canvas. Mounting: Relined. Measurement: 77 x 124cm. Notation: Signed and dated lower right: W. Kray Roma / 1869. Literature: Cf. Boetticher, Friedrich von: Malerwerke des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts, Volume I.,2, p. 794. Here a work with identical subject from 1876, listed under no. 12. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. As a member of the German Artists' Association in Rome, Wilhelm Kray often went on trips to Naples, which had a strong influence on his art. It was here that he found the motifs and themes that he drew on in many of his later works; according to the most authoritative dictionary of artists Thieme-Becker, his best paintings were created there. Romantically playful, in the best sense fantastic imagery became his speciality. Ancient mythologies and contemporary poetry served as inspiration. His fantasies of the Idyll, stylistically very different from his academic early works under Wilhelm Schirmer, won him many admirers. Thus his paintings are still listed in the inventory of important museums such as the Munich Pinakothek. His best-known paintings combine the atmospheric coastal landscapes of the South with an idealised vision of the simple life - often with an erotic playfulness that influenced salon painting at the end of the 19th century.

Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin The first porcelain manufactory at Berlin was founded on the suggestion of Frederick the Great by Wilhelm Caspar Wegely and J. Benckgraff in 1752, yet already 5 years later production was stopped because the king was not satisfied with the porcelain. With the invasion of Meissen by the Prussian army, many modelers and porcelain painters came to Berlin, where in 1761 the merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky founded a new factory. This was finally bought in 1763 by Frederick the Great, who named it ‘Royal Porcelain Factory’ and introduced the cobalt blue scepter mark. During this time, the factory began producing exquisite tableware in a late Rococo style, which was painted with flowers, birds and scenes after Watteau Boucher and Dutch masters in vivid colors. Famous porcelain painters of the manufactory were K. W. Böhme, B. Böhme and K. J. C. Klipfel; master modelers were Friedrich Elias Meyer and his brother Wilhelm Christian. Typical Berlin porcelain patterns on tableware were moldings, scale-ground borders, landscapes, birds and animals, molded basketwork patterns and pierced rims. After Theodor Schmuz-Baudiß took over as artistic director in 1798, the tableware was decorated in underglaze painting with landscapes and cityscapes in delicate colors. In 1871 the factory was moved to its present location at the Tiergarten near the Spree, so that the raw materials and finished products were finally able to be transported by ship. In 1886 the painting of porcelain tiles was added as a new line of production under the direction of Professor Alexander Kips. After the destruction of the factory during WWII, KPM was taken over in 1988 by the state of Berlin and since 2006 has been in the possession of Berlin based private banker Jörg Woltmann.
