Shown is a view of a village in the rising sun, through which a river meanders that is crossed by a bridge. The entire landscape is bathed in lilac colors, creating an atmospheric impression. The painting is signed Cyrillic and dated ’90-93’ lower right. It is further signed, dated and titled in Cyrillic with technique and dimensions on verso. It is overall in good condition with partially some overpainting, otherwise of fine impression. The image size is 81 x 129 cm. The framed dimensions are 87 x 137 cm. Aleksandr Kompus (b.1935) Aleksandr Kompus graduated from the department of architecture of the Ilya Repin Institute for Painting in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) in 1960. He then worked for the city of St. Petersburg as an architect. Kompus took an interest in landscape painting with motifs and subjects of the Russian realist painting tradition but developed his own intense painting style. This river actually flows about 120 km south of St Petersburg. The painting depicts the water meandering peacefully through the flat landscape. A farmstead with flowers growing nearby stands at the bank and woods line the horizon in the background. The clear river's water reflects the fluffy clouds in the sky. Kompus captured this Russian landscape in all its peacefulness far away from hectic cities in fresh and merry colours. The painting is in very good condition as is the beautiful silver frame. The painting is signed and dated, "A. Kompus 2006" at the lower right side and inscribed, „Kompus A. 2011 "Река Луга" [...] 40 x 95", on the reverse side. It depicts said gulf as extending into the flat landscape. Snow covers the shore and its dry grass and reeds. The Gulf of Finland (Russian: Финский залив), the subject of this composition, is the easternmost arm of the Baltic Sea. It extends between Finland and Estonia all the way to Russia and the river mouth of the Neva. The artist catches the scenery in a remarkably atmospheric way.
