    Est: €10,000 - €14,000

Signed and dated lower right: J: H: Koekkoek 1831 Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek was the progenitor of the Koekkoek family of painters, which branched out over three generations. Johannes Hermanus began his artistic career at the "Middelburgse Teeken-Academie", founded in 1778, where he received special distinction in 1803. In 1826 he moved to Durgendam, not far from Amsterdam, where he stayed until 1831. He spent the last years of his life in Amsterdam. His marriage to Anna van Kollwijk produced a daughter - Anna Koekkoek (b. 1812) - and four sons: Barend Cornelis, Marinus Adrianus the Elder, Johannes and Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder, who all received their first painting lessons in their father's studio and later devoted themselves to painting.

Laverende zeilschepen voor de Zeeuwse Kust (Sailing Vessels in a Stiff Breeze, Zeeland) (1833) Signed and dated 1833 lower left Oil on canvas, 54.2 x 73.5 cm Provenance: - Kunsthandel Simonis & Buunk, Ede (inv.no. 8519/ko) - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Born in Veere on the Zeeland island of Walcheren, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek was the head of an artistic family. Already around the age of twelve, Johannes Hermanus went to Middelburg to be apprenticed to the wallpaper painter Thomas Gaal (1739-1817). In addition, he attended classes at the Middelburg Drawing Academy in the evenings. His interest in drawing and painting ships and the sea was part of the prevailing painting tradition in watery Zeeland. Johannes Hermanus made painting ships in stormy weather, on scribbling waves, or on crystal-smooth water his specialty. As can be seen from this present lot, he painted these scenes with the greatest precision and provided them with a lively, narrative upholstery. His contemporaries reported that he made ship models that resembled every detail, for practise and study. He was praised for his realistic depictions of all kinds of ships. Johannes Hermanus became one of the most famous marine painters of his time, passing his talent on to four of his eight children. * Condition report available upon request

    JOHANNES HERMANUS KOEKKOEK (1778-1851)

    Est: €8,000 - €12,000

Schepen voor de Nederlandse kust bij storm (Ships off the Dutch Coast in Storm) Oil on panel, 30.9 x 43.7 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Many of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek's contemporaries chose the sea as their subject, but Johannes would prove to be one of the most accomplished seascape painters of them all and was already, in his own time, internationally renowned. The theoretical knowledge Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek had of all the ships is clearly visible in his paintings, and he even made, solely for practice, small but very accurate models of the vessels. Although the sea was his main subject, Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek made sure that his paintings were always versatile. The present lot, which he painted between 1820 and 1835, shows the beautifully balanced composition and precision in detail and execution for which Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek was known. Besides the skilled execution of the figures on the jetty and the way the light reflects on the waves, the subject of this painting also adds to its desirability. * Condition report available upon request

Koekkoek, Johannes Hermanus: Shipwreck off the Zeeland Coast

    Est: €10,000 - €15,000

Koekkoek, Johannes Hermanus 1778 Veere - 1851 Amsterdam Ca. 1815. Oil on wood. 41,5 x 55,5cm. Signed lower left: J.H. Koekkoek à Middelburgh. Framed. Literature: A. Nollert and G. de Werd: Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862), seine Familie, seine Schule und das Haus Koekkoek in Kleve, Kleve 2000, p. 39ff., ill. no. 38, p. 40. Provenance: Private collection, Europe. Dramatic scenes take place on the beach: a large sailboat has sunk off the coast, only the masts protrude diagonally from the surging water. A boat with sailors has already reached the beach, another one is still struggling against the rough sea. People rush to help. Two of the shipwrecked people in the middle of the painting show that they literally got away with their bare lives. The viewer's gaze falls through the dune landscape onto the small-figured scene. The grey, partly black clouds in the sky threaten to cloud over. The storm is not over yet. In the left half of the painting, the high pillar of a church ruin rises to the sky and offers shelter to three people. In the right half of the painting an almost white glowing dune forms the brightest part of the painting and merges into the white spray of the sea. Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, who created this painting, was a Dutch naval painter who often depicted the inferiority of man to the superiority of the elements of nature. He is the ancestor of the famous Koekkoek family of painters, and it is astonishing, given the high painterly quality of his work, that he probably achieved this mastery almost autodidactically, from the beginnings of an apprenticeship as a painter to a position in a wallpaper factory and evening courses at the Middelburg drawing academy. Thanks to his immense talent, he was able to set up his own business as a painter around 1806 and must also have been an excellent teacher, as all of his four sons became painters and his probably most famous son Barend Cornelis proudly reported that his father was his only teacher. The painting offered here is from Koekkoek's early period in Middelburg, before he left the Zeeland capital in 1826 and moved to Amsterdam. Shipwrecks were depicted in the Netherlands, which was characterized by seafaring, but the question arises whether shipwrecks in this period were also understood as a metaphor for the stormy times that the Dutch people had to endure during the occupation and annexation by Napoleonic France. We are grateful to Guido de Werd, Cologne, who confirmed the attribution in the original. Overall Size: 31.25 x 39 in. Purchase price through Christie's $32,600. (2010). The Dutch artist Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek (1778-1851) was a popular marine painter of the 19th century and is the father of the same-named painter family. It is presumed that the artists father was a boatman, what would explain Koekkoeks passion for seascapes. At first the artist took drawing lessons at the academy in Middelburg in the south of the Netherlands. At the beginning of the 1830s he went to Amsterdam with his family. He himself taught his four sons, who were talented landscape painters, in painting. The works of the artist were shown in contemporary national and international exhibitions. Koekkoek was guided by the works of the Dutch artists of the 17th

Overall Size: 31 x 39 in.
