    JAN KOBLASA 1932 - 2017 - UNTITLED

    Est: -

From the expert opinion of PhDr. Mahulena Nešlehová: "The painting presents a dark green-blue oval silhouette of a face, set in a bright golden rectangular light field, embedded in a darkened pictorial space. Judging by the manner of execution and the emphasis placed on the importance of light, the work was probably created in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In its choice of colours and the effect of the light formation, this work is reminiscent of Koblas's large-scale painting Me and Lolita (1960, Regional Museum in Teplice). But unlike that painting, which was inspired by the experience of the so-called new music, here we perceive a different, existentially focused intention. It is a representation of a direct "dialogue" of the artist with the malleable matter of the painting. Through spontaneous engraved lines and expressive interventions and gestures, we observe a record of the artist's psychological state of mind, transposed into the coloured matter of the silhouetted abbreviation of the face - the mass of illuminated anxiety and distress is tempered and redeemed by a golden luminous glow. This is the key image that foreshadowed the subsequent structurally conceived cycle of five paintings, Veronica's Veil, from 1961, but its profundity also stimulated Koblas's other abstract works created at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s (Head from 1959, Mock-up of My Brain from 1961, and the monotypes Diagram of My Brain from 1962). As can be seen from the above, the painting, whose name we unfortunately do not know, opened up an unexpectedly wide field of activity for the artist, and this is where the importance of this work lies." Technique: oil, nitro-cellulose lacquer, canvas, Signed: unsigned

1989. Wood, white varnished. 81 x 43 x 40. Koblasa took up a story from the Old Testament (Gen 22, 1-19) and depicted the dramatic biblical scene in his typical expressive, abstract-figurative formal language: While Abraham holds his son on the ground with his right hand, he stretches his raised left hand far away to kill his son with a knife - Provenance: Gallery Gardy Wiechern, Hamburg 03.06.2004; since then private collection Hamburg. - Czech sculptor, painter, graphic artist and author, studied sculpture at the Academy in Prague from 1952-58, left his homeland after the failure of the Prague Spring and fled to northern Germany via Milan and taught for over 30 years at the Muthesius Academy of Art in Kiel, where he influenced a generation of sculptors. The competition-winning design for the large-scale decoration of the apron of today's Václav Havel Airport is the work of Jan Koblasa, an important Czech post-war sculptor and painter. The relief was created not long after Jan Koblasa and Mikuláš Medek completed the decoration of the Jedovnice Church (1963). He learned about the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968 in Milan, Italy, and decided to emigrate. He returned to his country after twenty-two years abroad. Jan Koblasa Untitled

    Est: €3,000 - €4,000

Jan Koblasa 1932 Tabor - 2017 Hamburg Untitled Black granite, partly polished. 38 x 45 x 13 cm. Dec. 08, 2022

    JAN KOBLASA 1932 - 2017 - EMOTIONAL LIFE I

    Est: -

From the opinion of PhDr. Mahuleny Nešlehová: "The painting, which is an authentic work of the important sculptor, painter, graphic artist and writer Jan Koblasa (1932 - 2017), belongs to the expressively conceived figural cycle Emotional Life. He conceptualized the figure unconventionally as a flat, silhouetted sign, which in the physiognomy of the individual depicted heads he concretized it with a pattern of energetic and delicate lines and scratches that depicted the tension of emotional movement. With a sense of humor and irony (not excluding self-irony), he more than once turned a figural sign conceived in this way into a grin, or forcibly "took" it out of its environment and turned it into a mere tsar. Not an exception is the unsettling, maba Emotional Life I, which confirms the artist's invention. It is most likely the first painting of the given cycle. Koblasa entrusts the tension and action of emotional life in it to spontaneous scratches and fragile lines that accentuate the physiognomic features of the face of the standing male nude. Also soft pinkish the tones of the naked character silhouette of the body as well as the choice of contrasting colors of the image space specify the given psyc hic situation - they refer to its instability and changeability, to the near reversal of the vivacity of hopes embodied in the blue background in the weight of black, hopeless depression contained in the geometrically defined field behind the figure." Technique: Oil, enamel, hardboard, Signed: Unsigned

Jan Koblasa's work from the 1960s represents a representative and valuable example of his return to painting after the intense sculptural era. Purely abstract motifs, a kind of pragmatic of all events, began to form in the 1960s into hints of stylized figures that reflect the trend of the New Figuration. The harsh structural deformations, chaotic strokes and organic polarities that try to interconnect each other in The Pair reflect the intimate and existential line that Jan Koblasa devoted himself to intensively.
