    before a column, resting her arm on a balustrade, wearing décolleté white dress with gold trim and matching waistband, her sleeves held with pearl and ruby armlets signed on the reverse and dated Painted by M.A.Knight/ May-1821-/51 Berners Street and inscribed with the sitter's details gilded moulded frame with foliate motif rectangular, 131mm. (5 3/16in.) high; sold together with a profile of the same sitter as a child (2) Mary Ann Knight's work is always described as resembling that of her teacher and brother-in-law, Andrew Plimer and many copies of his work have been attributed to her as a result. The present lot shows her clear ability as a miniaturist, with a well defined style of her own.
