    Dec. 02, 2023

    Gwendolyn Knight, 1913-2005, untitled, Horse

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Gwendolyn Knight 1913-2005 untitled, Horse 1997 lithograph on BFK Rives paper 20 x 16 inches (image) 26 x 20 inches (sheet) signed and dated Provenance: private collection, Bentonville, AR Gwendolyn Knight was a lover of the animal and human form. She chose dancers, or sitters whose figures shape the space and create emotional and structural tension. They are folded and arched or they leap and unravel across the surface of her paintings like untied pieces of string. There is the carefully studied face, where youth hangs fragile on an eyelid or the gestured mark that captures a whole history. There are horses that run through dream space in black and white. Even in her simplest still-life paintings she revealed her mastery for manipulating the figure/ground relationship.

Signed "Lawrence" in oil, across verso, and "By Gwen Knight" and titled in ink and pen (twice), upper stretcher bar, verso. Provenance: private collection, New York. Head of Dancer is a wonderful example of Gwen Knight's rather enigmatic oil painting. In the 1950s, Knight studied dance with members of Martha Graham's dance company in New York. At the same time, as her husband Jacob Lawrence received national acclaim, Knight pursued her own figurative painting without gallery exposure.
