Manner of Joshua Reynolds (English, 1723-1792) Miss Theophila Gwatkin, Oil on canvas, 29 3/4" x 24 3/4", in a giltwood frame, Overall-37 1/2" x 32" Note: Theophila Gwatkin was the granddaughter of Reynolds's sister, Mary, and the painting was a gift for the sitter's father. It was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1789 with the title ‘Miss Gwatkin' and Francesco Bartolozzi (1725-1815) engraved it the same year with the title ‘Simplicity,' which gave the composition a sentimental appeal beyond the specificity of portraiture.

Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Attributed to Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) British, Oil on Canvas. Portrait of a Young Man in Armor. Provenance: Label on the back "Bought by Arthur Lewis Kennaway at Lord Sheffields Sale, 1909."  Overall: 36 X 30 1/2 in.  Sight: 29 1/2 X 24 in.  #2697 .  Sir Godfrey Kneller studied in Amsterdam under Ferdinand Bol, one of Rembrandt’s pupils, before going to Italy in 1672. His “Elijah” of that year gives evidence of a style close to Bol’s. In Italy he began to paint portraits and modified his style. Arriving in England in 1674 or 1675, he soon established himself as a portrait painter, especially after he painted Charles II, and he succeeded the leading portraitist of the Restoration Period, Sir Peter Lely, as principal painter to the king. Kneller was knighted in 1691 and made a baronet in 1715. Though married, he died without legitimate issue, and the baronetcy became extinct upon his death.

Henry Oxenden served at MP for Sandwich, Kent, from 1713 until his death in 1720, after which his younger brother, George Oxenden, inherited his seat, going on to serve as MP for Sandwich from 1720 to 1754, and also holding the positions of Lord of the Admiralty (1725-27) and Lord of the Treasury (1727-37).  Although Kneller was not known for specialising in portraits of children, he did on occasion depict younger sitters who still exude the authority and gravity of his adult figures, such as in his portrait of a brother and sister, possibly Richard Boyle and his sister, Lady Jane, which sold at Bonhams, London, on 5 July 2017 (lot 28) for £25,000.
