-- - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

  • IVAN VASILIJEVIČ KLIUN 1873 - 1943 - COMPOSITION WITH TRANSPARENT RED, BROWN AND BLUE
    Dec. 10, 2020

IVAN VASILIJEVIČ KLIUN 1873 - 1943 - COMPOSITION WITH TRANSPARENT RED, BROWN AND BLUE

    Est: -

The work Composition with transparent red, brown and blue is one of the essential expressions of a new direction of suprematism, whose father became Kazimir Malevich. Reality abstracted only into basic forms and completely devoid of descriptive criteria became a new avant-garde movement, which was joined by one of its iconic representatives, Ivan Vasilyevich Kliun, who later also devoted himself to cubofuturism. In his Composition, Kliun creates an iriacional two-dimensional space where he freely projects geometric shapes in basic colors and subcets them to the basic laws of optics. Kliun completely rejects the forms of utilitarian art and creates art that is based only on art itself. Suprematist painting becomes a visual form of Chlebnik's Zaum language, which inspired the movement and expressed its direction towards the transcendence. He made the art in question, inspired by concrete, completely abstract art, encouraging individuals to contemplate the world that is immaterial. Published by: Svetlana Kliunkova - Soloveichik: Ivan Vasilievich Kliun, 1994. p.183. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right in cyrillic alphabet "I Kliun"

    KLIUN, IVAN (1873-1943) Summer Landscape

    Est: £10,000 - £20,000

KLIUN, IVAN (1873–1943) Summer Landscape signed with initials and datsigned with initials and dated 1936, also further signed, titled in Cyrillic and dated 1931–1936 on the reverse. Gouache on paper, 28 by 36 cm. Provenance: Collection of S. Kliunkova-Soloveichik. Private collection, USA. Private collection, Europe. The work bears a stamp with authentication from S. Kliunkova-Soloveichik, the artist’s granddaughter, on the reverse. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert O. Glebova. Literature: S. Kliunkova-Soloveichik, Ivan Vasilievich Kliun, New York, IVK Art, 1993, p. 334, illustrated and listed. Kliun’s realistic landscapes in the 1930s turn out to be a kind of continuation of the countryside studies of his old haunts that he made in his younger days, and then throughout his life, in the Moscow area, in Vladimir Region and in his home village of Bolshie Gorki. Kliun talked a lot about his transition to Realist art — both in day-to-day jottings and his memoirs. He attached tremendous importance to that fact, regarding it as a vital stage in his artistic evolution and its logical conclusion. It is most remarkable that not only Kliun’s avant-garde period but this period too is reflected in the small collection of his works presented at the auction.

KLIUN, IVAN (1873–1943) Kazimir Malevich Reaping Buckweat signed with initials, further inscribed in Cyrillic "K. Malevich na kosbe" on the reverse. Pencil and watercolour on paper, 22 by 28 cm. 305, illustrated and listed. The strong friendship which existed between Ivan Kliun and Kazimir Malevich was of deep and abiding importance for both. As pioneering compatriots of a totally innovative painterly language, they exerted a profound influence on each other’s artistic development throughout their decades of close affinity, exchanging a multitude of letters and acting as models for each other. Their initial friendship was forged when both were studying in the studio of the celebrated painter Fedor Rerberg in Moscow between 1903 and 1906, when each artist was at a similar stage of personal and professional development. Kliun began acting as a model for Malevich during this time, as John Milner notes: “Malevich often used as a model his close friend the painter Ivan Klyun [sic] , whom he portrayed as a confident and independent country workman or villager. Klyun [sic] appears in a whole series of paintings, some including rural women giving the Old Believer’s sign of the cross, strongly suggesting that Malevich saw him as an Old Believer” (Exhibition catalogue, Malevich, London, 2014, p. 36). In turn, Kliun produced an intriguing depiction of his friend as a field worker, reaping buckwheat along with two women.

KLIUN, IVAN (1873–1943) Gathering Buckwheat signed with initials, inscribed in Cyrillic “Mezhdu Bolshimi i Malymi Gorkami”, titled and dated 1934 on the reverse. Pencil and watercolour on paper, 24.5 by 32 cm. 322, illustrated and listed. Works of the 1930s, included in the collection, reflect the return to figurative art and realism, typical for nearly all of the Russian avant-garde artists who were still alive in the late 1920s. These works also reveal Kliun’s interest in rural landscapes and genres. Particularly noteworthy here are the Gathering Buckwheat sketches from nature, one of which bears the inscription “K. Malevich reaping” on the back. Interestingly enough, these compositions were produced alongside Malevich’s “second peasant series”. While in Malevich’s post-Suprematist work, Kliun’s face is entirely transformed from the image of a “builder” into a de-individualised depiction of a “peasant’s head” and a “reaper”, exhibiting merely the basic features, Kliun, conversely, creates a completely realistic portrait drawing of Malevich the reaper with the very same attribute – a scythe – in his hand. Alongside similar “collective-farm scenes”, Kliun also makes several Cubist-style sketches of the figures of reapers, reverting once more to the problem of the architectonic structure of the human figure. But these drawings, now in the Costakis collection, only briefly hark back to his old interests.

KLIUN, IVAN (1873-1943) Composition with Lines

    Est: £20,000 - £30,000

KLIUN, IVAN (1873–1943) Composition with Lines Pencil on paper, 17.5 by 11 cm. Executed c. 1920. 193, illustrated and listed. Following The Flautist in terms of creation time in the offered collection is Composition with Lines (с. 1920), belonging to the series of Suprematist compositions. The first Suprematist compositions were made by Kliun in 1916 and were probably very similar to Malevich’s early Suprematist paintings. Both artists consistently followed the Suprematist principles that they formulated in their theoretical works, and during those years they worked along the same lines. Towards the end of the 1910s, however, Kliun had almost completely focused on developing all manner of variations on the relationship between abstract shape and colour. Following the idea of Suprematism, he created many graphic versions of constructs in one, two, three or many colours, in which he sought to achieve a balance of colour and form by using various combinations of geometrical shapes in space. Composition with Lines, like most of Kliun’s famous well-known Suprematist works, is known to exist in several versions. Apart from the pencil sketch presented in the catalogue, a smaller watercolour from the Costakis collection is also known, as well as a painted composition made from it considerably later, in 1932, now housed in the State Tretyakov Gallery.

KLIUN, IVAN (1873–1943) The Flautist signed with initials. Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper, 21 by 15 cm. Executed c. 1913. 81, illustrated and listed. Related literature: For sculpture Musician, see I.V. Kliun, Moi put v iskusstve, Moscow, RA, 1999, p. 29, illustrated. Another telling piece of evidence of Kliun’s creative quest is The Flautist (c. 1913), the sketch for the Cubist sculpture The Musician, which he fashioned in 1916 (now in the State Tretyakov Gallery). The period of the artist’s fascination with such spatial compositions made from various materials — painted wood and tin, celluloid and glass — coincided with the mid- 1910s, when his interest in the “architectonic and mechanical strength of a structure established analytically” gained the upper hand for a while over his painting experiments. In his memoirs, Kliun mentions Cubist Woman at Her Dressing Table, Fleeting Landscape and The Flautist Musician, with which a whole stack of preparatory sketches is associated, as being among the best Cubist sculptures of the 1910s. Nearly all of them reproduce a design that is already fully developed without any substantial changes and with the same frontal perspective. It is a human figure consisting of solid bodies of different shapes and colours, made of wood and held together by a dark rectangular board with a ball in the middle. The only feature that distinguishes the composition of the sketch to be auctioned is the pedestal on which the musician stands and which is absent from the other known drawings. Since a low square base, similar to the one depicted, was actually produced by Kliun for the three-dimensional sculpture, it is fair to assume that the sketch is the definitive one in the series and records the final stage of the artist’s work on The Musician.

KLIUN, IVAN (1873-1943) Portrait of Kazimir Malevich

    Est: £25,000 - £50,000

KLIUN, IVAN (1873–1943) Portrait of Kazimir Malevich inscribed in Cyrillic “K. Malevich” on the reverse. Pencil on paper, 7.5 by 6 cm. Executed c. 1914. 91, illustrated and listed. Chronologically, the selection opens with the work Portrait of Kazimir Malevich (c. 1914), which is a preparatory drawing for one of Kliun’s most famous Cubist paintings, The Sawyer. This composition is known today in at least three painted versions: produced in 1913 (Krasnodar Regional Art Museum), 1914 (Astrakhan State Art Gallery) and 1915–1922 (State Tretyakov Gallery), every one of which the artist carefully worked out in numerous preparatory pencil and watercolour studies and rough sketches. In fact, the saw motif becomes extremely important in 1913 both for Kliun and his closest friend and associate of those years, Kazimir Malevich, who worked along with him. The saw appears at that time in Malevich’s “illogical compositions”, but, most importantly, it comes to be a recognisable detail in his portrait of Kliun, clearly acting as a semantic symbol for both artists. The portrait, which Malevich called the Perfected Portrait of a Builder, was executed in 1913 and shown at the same Union of Youth exhibition where the first version of The Sawyer was displayed. Most certainly, that above work inspired Kliun to create the offered portrait of his friend as a sawyer. There is some cross-talk between the offered work and Kliun’s portrait, constructed by Malevich. If we compare the present drawing with the other preparatory sketches for The Sawyer in the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, it becomes evident that they share the similarly geometrical rendering of the beard, as well as the deliberate use of a saw and details of wooden architecture — typical attributes of Malevich’s representational picture. These same features are manifest not only in the 1914, painted version of The Sawyer, but also Kliun’s famous Cubo-Futurist self-portrait (1915–1922), known as Self-portrait with a Saw. The history of the creation and gradual evolution of this image is not just evidence of the friendship and shared artistic pursuits of Kliun and Malevich, the two close associates and kindred spirits, but also a splendid example of the transformation of Kliun’s own Cubo-Futurism, of which the present drawing is a fair representation.

KLIUN, IVAN (1873–1943) Poster for the Film “Battle of the Giants” Pencil, watercolour, gouache, ink and collage with paper on paper, 37 by 26.5 cm. Executed in the 1920s. Provenance: Collection of S. Kliunkova-Soloveichik. Private collection, USA. Private collection, Europe. The work bears a stamp with authentication from S. Kliunkova-Soloveichik, Ivan Vasilievich Kliun, New York, IVK Art, 1993, p. 251, illustrated and listed. The poster design by Kliun that is presented for auction is a truly unique example of film poster aesthetics during the avant-garde period. Unlike many works by Alexander Rodchenko and the Stenberg brothers, this design is just about the only surviving example of Kliun’s work for the film industry. After the revolution, Kliun, like most of his associates, became actively involved in experiments with industrial, urban and print design. He made sketches for the Moscow decorations marking the first anniversary of the October Revolution, and worked on book illustrations and film posters. Yet the artist’s interest in new media and, in particular, the cinema was by no means a random one, nor was it connected only with boosting his income. Kliun’s archive has preserved several of his articles on the cinema and the artist’s role in film production, as well as evidence of his attempts to broaden the traditional forms of artistic expression by deploying cinema and photographic techniques. Today it is difficult to judge the film for which the study of the poster Battle of the Giants was intended. A pencil inscription on the sketch reveals that the film’s cameraman was Alexei Gan, a close associate of Malevich and Kliun, and Yakov Protazanov was the director. One can only assume that the film is one of the lost examples of the avant-garde experimental cinema of the 1920s. After all, if an advertising poster has been produced for a film, the general assumption is that work on it has actually been carried out and that its release has been planned. In our case, however, another scenario is equally possible. Gan was involved in active theoretical work during the first half of the 1920s, publishing the Kino-Fot magazine and organising a large number of projects, exhibitions and conferences as well. He is known to have embarked on many different tasks at the same time and certainly did not complete some of them. The same fate may well have over- taken the film he was contemplating. A film with the same name, Battle of the Giants, really did exist and is known in Soviet cinema history, but it was actually made by a completely different team — by the director Viktor Turin and the cameraman Louis Forestier — and was released in 1926.
