    Susan Kliewer (American, b. 1940). "Mischievous Ones" bronze artist proof 5 of 45, 2006. Signature, date, and edition number on one clown's outfit. A remarkable bronze by Susan Kliewer, one of the Southwest's most critically acclaimed sculptors. "Mischievous Ones" features five Pueblo Sacred Clowns engaged in playful antics upon a large Puebloan vessel. According to Mountain Trails Gallery, "Valued as teachers as well as ancestral spirits, these Pueblo Sacred Clowns poke fun with often mischievous antics. These characters come out at dances and act out attributes or unacceptable behavior often in an extreme fashion." In Kliewer's words, "Always mischievous, sometimes gluttonous, Koshare are a perfect satire of normal village life. Their entertaining antics are designed to teach while also making fun." A striking Kliewer bronze, replete with impressive artistry and technique, mounted upon a wood rotating base fit with an engraved brass plaque. "Mischievous Ones" features five Pueblo Sacred Clowns engaged in playful antics upon a large Puebloan vessel. According to Mountain Trails Gallery, "Valued as teachers as well as ancestral spirits, these Pueblo Sacred Clowns poke fun with often mischievous antics. These characters come out at dances and act out attributes or unacceptable behavior often in an extreme fashion." Artist biography: Born and raised in southern California, Susan Kliewer prepared sculptures for bronze casting at a foundry for many Arizona sculptors such as John Hampton, Joe Beeler, and Buck McCain. In 1988, she began creating her own sculptures and won the People's Choice Award in 1991 at the National Sculpture Walk in Sedona, Arizona. Her work depicts the Navajo people whom she has lived beside and been inspired by for the past forty years.
