    § PETER KING (BRITISH, 1928-1957)

    Est: £8,000 - £12,000

§ PETER KING (BRITISH, 1928-1957) PETER KING (BRITISH, 1928-1957) Totemic Figure carved wood on a wooden base 164 cm. (64 1/2 in.) (high) (excluding the base) Executed circa 1956 Provenance With England & Co., London, where purchased by the present owner Due to his untimely death, Peter King has been largely overlooked in the history of British art in the 1950s. However, recent discoveries of his previously missing artworks, diaries, photographic plates, and other personal items have shed light on the significance of his contributions during that period. Despite his short life, King was an incredibly prolific artist whose exceptional talent was acknowledged by renowned sculptor Henry Moore. Moore appointed him as his assistant, alongside emerging sculptors like Anthony Caro. King was part of a collective of artists associated with Moore's studio, the teaching team at St Martin's School of Art, the Abbey Art Centre in London, and Victor Musgrave's Gallery One in Soho. He received the prestigious Boise Travelling Scholarship and funding from the BFI (British Film Institute) for an animated film. He exhibited both his artwork and the film across Europe, gaining recognition for his artistic endeavours. Unfortunately, at the age of twenty-nine, King tragically passed away from blood-poisoning. "To encounter Peter King's work is to discover an artist who is, extraordinarily, all but unknown today despite having had a rich and copious production. Even a brief study of the work immediately available in London together with the records of pieces lost or not yet located and others recently discovered confirms that he was an artist with an unusually wide range of references, of imagination, of technical and material resources." (Art historian Margaret Garlake discussing the artist) ARR

  • Peter King,  British 1928-1957 -  Untitled (Mother and Child), c.1952;  lead, H20 x W9.2 x D9.7 cm
    Mar. 14, 2023

    Peter King,  British 1928-1957 -  Untitled (Mother and Child), c.1952;  lead, H20 x W9.2 x D9.7 cm

    Est: £1,000 - £1,500

Peter King,  British 1928-1957 -  Untitled (Mother and Child), c.1952;  lead, H20 x W9.2 x D9.7 cm (including base) (ARR) Note: this early work was made by the artist when he was working for Henry Moore and living at the Abbey Art Centre in New Barnet. Abbey Arts Centre was established in 1946 by William Ohly, an art dealer who ran the Berkeley Galleries in Davies Street, London, and was a focus point for many Australian expatriate artists from 1947-1951 and figures including Alan Davie, F. N. Souza and Lucien Freud. Much of Ohly's collection of ethnographic art was on display near King's studio. King began working for Henry Moore in 1952, working on one of the components for his major Time Square Commission. King would exhibit with Gallery One in the 1950s and at the important exhibition 'New Sculptors, Painter-Sculptors' at the ICA, London. The artwork is structurally sound and the lead figure is firmly attached to the base. There are some minor scratches and scuffs to the lead figure throughout. There are a few clusters of surface imperfections to the reverse of the figure but these are perhaps original to the work. The wooden base with some minor scuffs and marks.
