    Est: €1,000 - €1,500

Captain John Duncan King (1789-1863) APPROACH TO KILLARNEY FROM THE ROAD TO MALLOW, 1857 signed and dated lower left; original inscribed labels on reverse oil on panel 15 by 20cm., 6 by 8in. John Duncan King entered the army in 1806 and was made lieutenant in 1808. He served in Holland and the Pyrenees during the Peninsular War. In January 1815 he married Sally Tindall in Chelmsford, Essex, but by spring had returned to France, where he was present at the capture of Paris. Also in 1815 he made his artistic debut, exhibiting three views of France and Spain with the Hibernian Society of Artists in Dublin. During the years 1824 to 1851 he was honorary exhibitor at the RA, showing views of Portugal, Spain, India, Tahiti and Ireland. He appears to have settled in Ireland by 1828, when he sent two classical landscapes to the RHA from an address in Kingsville, Waterford. Views of Ross, Fermoy and Killarney were shown at the RA in 1838, '39, '42, '44, '47 and '51. He was made military Knight of Windsor and died, aged 74 in Windsor. Provenance: Presented by the artist's grandson, Mr Paul King, to Lieut. Colonel Walter Edward Webb, late King's Own Scottish Borderers and London Scottish Territorial Battalion, and a Military Knight of Windsor, April 1931
